4.0 out of 5 stars This Soleus Air FS2-40R is FANtastic!, June 13, 2009
This review is from: Soleus Air FS2-40R032, 16 Inch, 3 Speed Oscillating Stand Fan with Remote Control (Kitchen)
My wife and I have been using this fan in our bedroom for several months. We find this fan to be quieter than any other stand fan that we have ever owned (and we have owned many). I will not ramble on about all of the great features of this device as they are explained quite well in the product description here on Amazon.

The fan arrived from Amazon in just a few days. The box arrived without a scratch and upon inspection I found no damage to any of the contents. The asssembly instructions are a little confusing but it is honestly easy to figure out without any instructions. Six screws and washers attach the round, weighted base to the middle control section. Some have complained about the screw holes not aligning properly. Well I found that I had to have my wife hold the control module pole while I gently twisted the round base, at the same time that I installed the mounting screws. This allowed the screws to be installed without problem. Two small screws attach the fan motor housing to the extension pole coming from the top of the middle control section. The fan blade goes on easily. The only real challange I had was attaching the fan safety cage, which requires a gentle yet firm touch to snap the two halves together while making sure everything is lined up properly. It was after I had everything installed and the fan plugged in that I noticed that there was a layer of protective plastic over the Soleus badge plate in the center of the front fan safety cage. I pulled the plastic off and everything was ready to go (or so I thought).

I turned the fan on and played around with all of the settings. The fan worked extremly well and seemed very quiet, even at the highest speed setting. However, when we turned the fan on low, to run overnight while we slept, I noticed a little noise. It just sounded like the typical noise of the fan blades moving air. As I listened the noise seemed to get louder and softer without any sort of pattern. I shut the fan off and turned on the light. I ended up pulling the front of the safety cage off and it was at that moment that I noticed some protective plastic on the inside of the front safety cage, on the backside of the Soleus badge plate. If you remember, I mentioned that I had pulled some plastic off the front of this badge plate but obviously the plastic was wrapped around the entire plate. I just didn't notice that when I was assembling the safety cage. It was a little challanging but I was able to remove all of the plastic from the backside of that plate.

After re-attaching the front section of the safety cage, I turned the fan on low and listened carefully. The strange noise was gone and the fan has remained extremely quiet ever since. Although most of the components of this fan are made of plastic, it has a fairly solid feel. It looks very high tech and attractive. We love the adjustment abilities of the motor/fan head. Be advised, the platinum (silver) colored plastic on the base and control module scratch very easily. I put a fairly large scratch across the top surface of the round base by accident and it looks quite ugly. However, it is in our bedroom and nobody will see it anyway. Overall my wife and I would highly recommend the Soleus Air FSH-40G remote controlled stand fan to anyone looking for a quiet, stylish looking stand fan that has wonderful features, including an easy to use remote control. It is easy to assemble, moves a lot of air with very little noise, has just about any feature that you could ever want from a fan, and it seems to be built with quality components that should last for many years. The cost of this fan is not cheap but I feel a fan of this quality and performance is well worth the money we paid. =o)

*** UPDATE: After owning this fan for roughly a year the fan head suddenly tilted all the way down, as many other reviewers have complained about. A simple call to Soleus resolved the issue, as they shipped out a replacement fan at no cost to me. After taking apart the motor head assembly I found the problem. There is a plastic tab, with a little spring, that had snapped off. It is this little plastic tab and spring that is supposed to hold the entire weight of the fan motor in the desired position, and once broken the weight of the motor causes the entire assembly to flop down. Even though Soleus was kind enough to send me a replacement fan, I was also able to repair the motor head by installing a sheet metal screw, which also required me to cut the spring down to about half its original height. After reassembling the motor head it now stays in position and can be adjusted properly without fear of the adjustment assembly breaking again. I think the original design of this component is a bit poor considering the high cost of this fan. Other than this slight design flaw I still feel that the FS2-40R fan is a quality product, with a lot of great features, that should last for many years to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only fan of its type in this price range, June 28, 2009

I spent a lot of time looking for a fan in this price range. I wanted something more than a basic fan, I wanted this to help move air around my apartment.

I don't have ceiling fans in my apartment so circulation can be a problem. I looked at every store in the area, from electronics/appliance retailers, to sears, lowes, home depot etc. No one, and I mean no one had a fan with both horizontal and vertical motion. The fans they offered were either very cheap, or very expensive. This fan is moderately priced which was what I was looking for.

I don't rate this fan high because of a few reasons.
Cons
1. When it's on, it sounds like it's raining outside, that can be difficult to get used to at first.
2. The fan is held in place with clicking points that feel very plastic. If you bump into the fan it changes angles very easily, and if you do this much, I can see this wearing out quickly.

Pro's
1. Remote control :)
2. Vertical and horizontal motion
3. Good moderate price, its more than the cheap fans you can find, but definitely gives good value for the money.
4. Metal cage with fine gaps, children won't be sticking their fingers into the fan.
5. Choice of motion modes. vertical, horizontal, and vertical and horizonal together. It is not really a figure 8, which for my purposes is better.

I'd recommend this fan for just about anyone who needs a fan and wants something more than the basic fans. (to be honest I think vertical and horizontal motion on fans of this type is a basic function, but evidently that is no longer the case, definitely one place where older things are better than they are now.)

3.0 out of 5 stars 3-year life expectancy, October 5, 2009
This review is from: Soleus Air FS2-40R032, 16 Inch, 3 Speed Oscillating Stand Fan with Remote Control (Kitchen)
I received this fan as a gift four years ago along with another model of Soleus fan. The other model broke within about 3 months. The blades just stopped turning and the motor made a loud buzzing noise. I placed a call to Soleus and they replaced it with no problems. I was pleased with their customer service. However, the replacement fan broke the next year and I just threw it away. I then moved this model into my bedroom and began using it on a nightly basis to keep the air moving. It worked fine for awhile, but after a few months, it would flop as other users describe. If you propped it up it would stay, but the oscillation feature no longer worked. Last week, the blades stopped turning. The motor makes noise, and if you give the blades a push, it eventually starts working. And it continues working as long as you don't turn it off, but I'd give it about a week before it dies completely. The remote features are great, and the electronic features still work. It's the mechanical ones that have burned out. It was a good fan, but if you plan on using it daily, plan on replacing it in three years or less.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good looks but so-so performance., April 17, 2009

This review is from: Soleus Air FS2-40R032, 16 Inch, 3 Speed Oscillating Stand Fan with Remote Control (Kitchen)
I have owned this fan for a year. My chief complaint is that the fan head seems to be too heavy for the mechanism that holds it up, and the head is constantly falling over on the base. Then in order to get the fan to work I have to hold the head up while I turn the fan on.

The fan will then run properly until someone just barely nudges it, then the head falls and we have to start the procedure over again.

Also, the thermostat feature on this unit doesn't register the correct temperature, and so the automatic fan can not work as designed.

The fan looks great, but construction is too flimsy to last.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth the money, August 1, 2011

This fan looks great but with no more than 2 weeks of use, it already is on its way out. The digital display doesn't work. I push buttons sporadically to get it to get it to the setting I want and now when I plug it in, I pray that it clicks twice indicating that it'll actually work for me!!! It's just not worth the money. And because it's past the 'warranty' period, I just have to pray it'll work for this summer!

I purchased two of these fans based on on the great Soleus Air name. I own three of their heaters and they are both energy efficient and reliable. The fans lasted 2 days. The Control Box overheated and then never switched on again. The second fan I have did the same thing but lasted 4 days. I feel they are not even worth the time spent assembling them. Don't waste your time on this Fancy Fan with the Fancy control options. I am replacing with the cheapest no frills fan I can find.

It has a loud hiss as if the spacing of the bars in the safety screen, or their diameter, is too small. I live in the country: no noise. This fan is not acceptable in that environment - unless you leave the bedroom TV on all night. Almost any overhead fan at any price will be 90% more quiet. At a list price 3-4X that of other floor 16" fans, you'd expect some effort in the design, but it appears to simply be a collection of parts from the same Chinese contractor that seems to make most of these fans. This fan is additional proof that 'You get what you pay for' is very often not true. My reference fan is the same type/size made by Sanyo. It is quiet but no longer made. Jim

This review is from: Soleus Air FS2-40R032, 16 Inch, 3 Speed Oscillating Stand Fan with Remote Control (Kitchen)
This is the third one I've purchased for this hot summer. They work great, not too noisy, easy to assemble and with remote - one doesn't need to get out of bed at night to adjust or turn on/off. We're very happy with ours. Fan has a nice arc/range and is very easy to operate. Would gladly buy again!

I was very surprised to read the negative reviews about this fan. I've actually owned it for a year, and was going to purchase a second one. I've never had a problem with it at all and I LOVE the temperature setting feature. It works great. The fan starts out low in the morning, but by the afternoon when it's hot, it's cranked itself up to high. I also really like the figure 8 setting because it really blows the air around nicely.

I would defintely recommend this product.
