downgraded to 3 stars after 7 months of use, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Soleus Air MS-12 Reflective Heater (Kitchen)
The MS-12 is exactly 450W on low & 900W on high. I have 4 of these I bought here last year at half this price. At that price I was happy they lasted for daily use from fall to early spring. For under 20 bucks & keeping things toasty the whole heating season on less electricity I gave it 3 stars because one by one they all broke.
By spring the switches had melted on all of them, & were permanently stuck on the high, low, or off position. I ended up bypassing the switches so they're all ways on high.
It's a shame, this were efficient RADIANT space heaters for the price, directing the heat where you need it most instead of blowing it all around the room on a lot less electricity than most electric heaters. I saved a bundle on my heating bills with them.
Also these have a pair of VERY bright yellow halogen bulb heating elements, not dim red or orange elements. It's like sitting in front of a pair of bright yellow flood lights in an interrogation room. Not only is it too bright for a bedroom, but way too much glare to even watch TV with it nearby.

Soleus reflective heater beats my maxi-heat fan heater, January 27, 2005
This review is from: Soleus Air MS-12 Reflective Heater (Kitchen)
I use this portable heater in my RV.
It is way better than my previous ceramic fan heater and here is why.
It is quieter, it is silent if the oscilation is off, it is warmer, it uses less electricity, it doesnt dry out the nasal passages, it doesnt create a draft, it doesnt require disassembling every few months to clean all the dust out of it.
The only disadvantages I have found when using it are, it is bright, almost too bright if you want to sleep with it on, it is larger than my ceramic fan heater and takes up more floor space, it gets hotter to the touch than the ceramic heater.
At the end of the day, I use this heater all the time, and my fan heater is now only used if it gets so cold that I two heaters.
If my fan heater breaks I will get another Soleus MS-12 to replace it.

*** Updated Review ***
OK, I said this was better for my cats then for me. WAY WAY wrong there. There's not enough space between the heating element and the grate so when my long-haired cat walked to close to it, his fur got scorched. It didn't burn him, but it terrorized him and you could tell where he'd been for the next two days from the singed fur smell. The oscilating fan style one has a much larger space between grate and element and my cats can get as close as they like. I can't reset my star rating but I'd set it to zero if I could.

I'm a big fan of reflective heaters (sorry for the bad pun...) as are my cats, but this one is better for them than for me. I purchased this one after my old Soleus died. I think I'll go back to the other one. My old one was an oscillating fan-style reflective. It stood about two feet off the ground and the had a reflective disk (instead of the rectangular reflectors on this one). This one does a great job of heating the floor on which it sits (which my cats appreciate quite a lot). Since I am rarely sitting on the floor, however, this heater isn't doing the job for me. If you like reflective heaters (they're energy efficient, noiseless, and quite effective if they're pointed at you but they're very bright, and they take a very long time to actually warm a room), then go with the fan-style reflectives that sit off the floor. They'll beat this one.
