4.0 out of 5 stars downgraded to 3 stars after 7 months of use
The MS-12 is exactly 450W on low & 900W on high. I have 4 of these I bought here last year at half this price. At that price I was happy they lasted for daily use from fall to early spring. For under 20 bucks & keeping things toasty the whole heating season on less electricity I gave it 3 stars because one by one they all broke.

OK, I said this was better for my cats then for me. WAY WAY wrong there. There's not enough space between the heating element and the grate so when my long-haired cat walked to close to it, his fur got scorched. It didn't burn him, but it terrorized him and you could tell where he'd been for the next two days from the singed fur smell. The...

For under 20 bucks & keeping things toasty the whole heating season on less electricity I gave it 3 stars because one by one they all broke.

By spring the switches had melted on all of them, & were permanently stuck on the high, low, or off position. I ended up bypassing the switches so they're all ways on high.

It's a shame, this were efficient RADIANT space heaters for the price, directing the heat where you need it most instead of blowing it all around the room on a lot less electricity than most electric heaters. I saved a bundle on my heating bills with them.

Also these have a pair of VERY bright yellow halogen bulb heating elements, not dim red or orange elements. It's like sitting in front of a pair of bright yellow flood lights in an interrogation room. Not only is it too bright for a bedroom, but way too much glare to even watch TV with it nearby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soleus reflective heater beats my maxi-heat fan heater, January 27, 2005

I use this portable heater in my RV.
It is way better than my previous ceramic fan heater and here is why.
It is quieter, it is silent if the oscilation is off, it is warmer, it uses less electricity, it doesnt dry out the nasal passages, it doesnt create a draft, it doesnt require disassembling every few months to clean all the dust out of it.

The only disadvantages I have found when using it are, it is bright, almost too bright if you want to sleep with it on, it is larger than my ceramic fan heater and takes up more floor space, it gets hotter to the touch than the ceramic heater.

At the end of the day, I use this heater all the time, and my fan heater is now only used if it gets so cold that I two heaters.
If my fan heater breaks I will get another Soleus MS-12 to replace it.

It didn't burn him, but it terrorized him and you could tell where he'd been for the next two days from the singed fur smell. The oscilating fan style one has a much larger space between grate and element and my cats can get as close as they like. I can't reset my star rating but I'd set it to zero if I could.

I'm a big fan of reflective heaters (sorry for the bad pun...) as are my cats, but this one is better for them than for me. I purchased this one after my old Soleus died. I think I'll go back to the other one. My old one was an oscillating fan-style reflective. It stood about two feet off the ground and the had a reflective disk (instead of the rectangular reflectors on this one). This one does a great job of heating the floor on which it sits (which my cats appreciate quite a lot). Since I am rarely sitting on the floor, however, this heater isn't doing the job for me. If you like reflective heaters (they're energy efficient, noiseless, and quite effective if they're pointed at you but they're very bright, and they take a very long time to actually warm a room), then go with the fan-style reflectives that sit off the floor. They'll beat this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm, but oh so BRIGHT!, November 21, 2005

I read the other reviews and knew that there were complaints about this heater being "overly bright" when turned on. Believe me, they were not kidding. This heater is nice and I love the fact that is ocillates, but it will light up a room like nothing I have ever seen. I am almost afraid someone may see it from the outside and think they are seeing a fire in the house! However, it does work well for us and we are going to enjoy it all winter because it does heat nicely.

I love the heater. I have 106 yr old house with high ceilings. I use this heater in the coldest room in my home and it heats up that room better than any other heater I have (and I several different types of heaters). You do need to be careful with the turn on/turn off switch because it will strip but other than that our family think it is great.

2.0 out of 5 stars power specs incorrect, September 26, 2006

The MS-12 is exactly 450W on low & 900W on high. The power rating here is totally wrong. It is not fan forced. There is no fan. For so grossly false advertising it, I knocked off one star. I have several of these I bought here last year at half this price. At that price I was happy they lasted for daily use from fall to early spring. For under 20 bucks & keeping things toasty the whole heating season on less electricity I'd normally had given it 3 stars. But one by on they all broke.

By spring the switches has melted on all of them, & were permanently stuck on the high, low, or off position. I ended up bypassing the switches so they're all ways on high.

It's a shame, this were efficient RADIANT space heaters for the price, directing the heat where you need it most instead of blowing it all around the room for much less electricity than most electric heaters. I saved a lot on my heating bills with them.

There is no fan. There is no noise. I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about. The heater is completely silent. I have 4 of these I bought here last year at half this price. Arrived, barely turned on, worked for 10mins, then died. Cheap build quality was obvious...looked like it was put together by a 8th grader for a science fair. Thank god for Amazon's great return policy.

4.0 out of 5 stars BRIGHT BUT TOASTY!, December 10, 2005

Radiant heaters warm your body directly, but, keep in mind, this one is very bright. Place it slightly behind you, out of your line of sight. At night, you won't need any additional light in your room.

It's very, very toasty, even on the "low" setting and absolutely quiet.

I had to use an extension cord (not supposed to) so I used one desgined for a window air conditioner and the cord always feels cool to the touch. To be on the safe side, though, I unplug it when I"m not in the room.

Very good value for the money but don't forget the "brightness" issue.

1.0 out of 5 stars IF it works...., December 29, 2005

For the two weeks or so that this piece of crap functioned, it worked fairly well. The brightness, etc, did not bother me. It's a little on the small side. But the piece of junk completely kicked out after barely using it at all, I used it less than ten times and for less than a month, and now turning it in on has no effect all of the sudden.
