Still Dominating the Dark Side of Metal,
By
This review is from: Solfernus Path (Audio CD)
Back in 2005 Darzamat unleashed the groundbreaking and still what I consider to be the definitive of Dark Metal that is the album Transkarpatia. Finally we get the follow up and it does not disappoint utilizing the same formula of melodic Gothic atmosphere and Black/Death Metal brutality. As with the previous albums Darzamat continues to use the Beauty and the Beast vocal style and it truly is one of the best examples of the style around today. The album begins with some tranquil vocalizing and the opener 'False Sleepwalker' erupts into a barrage of symphonic brutality lead by Flauros' raspy growls and Nera's hauntingly melodic contrast. From the get go you can tell this album is going to be just as amazing as Transkarpatia. But the question is does it surpass it's predecessor or is simply another helping of the same thing? That question is answered on the following track 'Vote For Heresy' as the band kicks up the pace and shows that they have a new found aggressiveness unheard on the previous album. The guitars on Solfernus Path def have a prominent role and can range from chaotic technical Black Metal esque riffing to Death style leads and even some nice solo's/breakaways are found riddled through out the album. Keyboardist Spectre is a very skilled musician and keeps a melodic feel to the most brutal and chaotic points of the album. Such as the epic and personal favorite 'Final Conjuration' where Spectre uses basic symphonic styles to keep a overall dark atmosphere to the brutal overtones of the pummeling double bass and roaring guitars. Though the keyboards do shine most on the more ambient points of each track and most especially during the parts where Nera's female vocals take lead point. Like on the previous release the band chose to have short 'Intro's' that lead into various songs and adds to that Dark atmosphere with quiet vocalizing, eerie echoes and strange musical arrangements. Their are four intro's in total, the longest of which is merely a minute and sixteen seconds so its not filler simply just adds to the overall dark appeal of the album. My favorite track on the album would easily be the tempo change littered and chaotic 'Chimera' near the end of the album. It simply has that definitive Darzamat sound and the brutality never lets up. Though I will admit the closing track 'Mesmeric Seance' came in at an extremely close second due to the amazing soloing and the different vocal styles used. All in all this to me is an amazing album by a band that so far has yet to release anything I did not enjoy. I am honestly torn as to whether this album is better then Transkarpatia but that may because this album hasn't grown on me completely yet as the previous one has been a mainstay in my CD Player. My honest advice to any newcomers not familiar would be to get both as they accent one another very nicely. When it all comes down to it Darzamat is a band that breaks the mold and stands on its own with it's own unique style and fans of the more Extreme side of Metal can and will enjoy this. I truly hope my review encouraged you to look further into the Darzamat Discography and ultimately purchase some of their music. If so, please click 'Yes' below and support a supporter of Extreme music. Thank you for reading and feel free to ask questions or give your opinions of my review, I enjoy the feedback. Thanks again. -A Loyal Darzamat Minnion
