Editorial Reviews

North American pressing includes two bonus tracks, a previously unreleased, non-album funk jam called 'Year of the Pig' and an unreleased dub version of an album track, 'Strugglers Dub'. Fourth album from the Wellington, New Zealand-based outfit. Solid Ground is the follow-up to The Black Seeds third album Into The Dojo, which spent five weeks at #1, reached well over double-platinum sales in New Zealand, and garnered critical acclaim and strong airplay both at home and in Europe. Joined for the first time on an album by trumpet player Andrew Christiansen and keyboardist Nigel Patterson, Solid Ground has come on the back of two years of extensive New Zealand and international live touring, resulting in a constantly evolving, eight-member creative process. Sonar Kollective.

5.0 out of 5 stars what music should strive to become October 14, 2008
Format:Audio CD
The Black Seeds never fail to impress me. This cd is no exception. Solid Ground has all the reggae awesomeness that make the Black Seeds one of the best bands iv ever heard. Their style plus their positive vibes and messages are just so refreshing in this time of corporate ran music.

all i can say is get this cd, roll up a dutch, and start grovin,

props to the boys of the band, now i wish i could see them live, that would be a show!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard not to agree .... August 25, 2011
By Redman
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Five stars is a huge wrap for any recording, but it's hard not to agree that Solid Ground is worthy. The groove will carry you away, deep into a NZ summer!

Stick on track 4 ("Love is a Radiation"), grab the one you love and get dancin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars rare talent October 16, 2009
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Saw the black seeds with John Browns Body in Ithaca, NY. They are very very good. Although Solid Ground is their best over all, I went back and got most of their music and it's what I play these days....awesome. They are a perfect unique replacement for UB40 as long as they stay together. As an observer I see the degradation of so many groups when even one member quits throwing the chemistry off.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Couple of Good Songs November 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A few fantastic songs, but the rest are decent to poor. This band is really good when they do rootsy/dubby reggae --- "Come to Me" and "Dust and Dirt", for example --- but weak when they do soul-type tunes. While they aren't nearly as good as Fat Freddy's Drop, they're similar to their New Zealand reggae siblings in that they combine rootsy/dubby reggae with soul but are at their best when they stick to the reggae.
