The rocking side of Alvin Lee, March 31, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Solid Rock (Audio CD)
Think Alvin Lee and most people will tell you what a great blues guitarist he is, but he's also one great rock and roller and this collection showcases that. This is a collection of songs he did both with his old band Ten Years After and "solo". The songs were picked by Alvin himself so you've got a great insight into his own favorite rockers too. Great choices! There really aren't any weak spots at all.

an aging fan for an ageless artist, December 12, 2004
This review is from: Solid Rock (Audio CD)
I was managing a Radio Shack in Spokane in 1973 when I first got turned on to Alvin Lee. We had a quadrophonic (remember quad?)demo LP that featured an eclectic mix of artists, including TYA doing "I'd love to Change the World". My first impression of the band was "dang, who is this guy burning up the rosewood?" At that time the guys getting all the accolades for guitar work were, of course, Hendrix and Clapton. Lee's accomplishments on the instrument just astounded me, and still do. Record industry brass, being who they are, just have buried this guy in the forgotten pile. He is truly one of the unsung heroes of rock and blues. Ask 10 rock fans about Alvin Lee and 5 have heard of him. Along with Terry Kath, Johnny Winter, Peter Green, and Kanny Kirwan.
Anyway, this album is an awesome collection of work. I cannot recommend it highly enough for devoted fans of rock who can appreciate and recognize a real guitar king. "Guitar god" is overused and I won't denigrade him by applying it here.
Oh yeah, if you want some sweet blues check out "Pure Blues", Alvin's collection of some of his favorite numbers done solo and with TYA.
