Book Description

January 1991
Solid state ionics is a new and interdisciplinary science comprising physics, chemistry and materials science of ion transport phenomena in solids, and properties resulting from ion mobility. Activity in the field is growing rapidly not only as pure science but also applied science. The International Conferences on Solid State Ionics is held bienially, with a large attendance ranging from battery engineers to theoreticians of ion transport. The term, "solid state ionics", first used in 1970 by Prof. Takehiko Takahashi, Nagoya University, has become an internationally authorized nomenclature since an international journal with the same name began publication in 1980. Previously, this science focussed its interest mostly on solid electrolytes which conduct electric current almost exclusively through ionic migration. This volume comprises three parts - fundamentals (Chapters 1-5), materials (Chapters 6 and 7) and applications (Chapters 8-13). Mixed conduction and related materials are given their own chapters (Chapters 5 and 7). Moreover, topics related to mixed conductors are abundant in the section on applications. The balance between traditional achievements and recent research topics because both solid electrolytes and mixed conductors have a long historical background although the concept or discipline of solid state ionics is a new one.
