About the Author

P. Aarne Vesilind is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and R.L. Rooke Chair in the Historical and Societal Context of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University. Before joining Bucknell, he was a Professor at Duke University from 1970 to 1999. At Bucknell, Dr. Vesilind's teaching specialties are environmental engineering, professional ethics, engineering communications, sludge treatment and disposal, design of water and wastewater treatment plants, air pollution control, and solid waste engineering. His research interests include wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and professional ethics. Dr. Vesilind is also the co-author of Vesilind/Worrell/Reinhart, SOLID WASTE ENGINEERING (Brooks/Cole 2002).

As far as textbooks go, this one is actually pretty readable. I don't have great difficulty staying awake while reading it. It seems to be organized fairly well. However, it is a little bit dated and doesn't cover some of the more contemporary issues in solid waste management like prevalance of transfer stations and limited number of landfills. Overall though an accessible text.
