Product Description

Legend says that Solitaire was invented to entertain Louis XIV, "The Sun King" who ruled from 1643 to 1715. A French engraving dating from 1697 shows Princess de Soubise playing the game of solitaire. This humble game of strategy has challenged and stumped mathematicians, royalty, and the run of the mill game-players for centuries. It's no wonder that Solitaire has captivated so many throughout the years. One could spend an entire morning, afternoon and evening trying to win at this game.

There are more expensive boards out there but this one was a great value for a good quality board.

Wood Solitaire with Marbles

This is a very old and quite clever little game. There are no bright colors and whistles and bells - just a simple wooden board and 33 shiny pale blue marbles. The object of the game is to remove the marbles by jumping them with the final goal of leaving one marble in the center of the board. The placement of the final marble in the center of the board denotes a "perfect" game. Looks are deceiving - this is no child's game. I have played this puzzle about thirty times and have two perfect games to my credit. The interesting point is that I can't say with any certainty exactly how I arrived at my placement of a solitairy marble in the center of the board. Therein lies the hook of this game which I highly recommend.

This is the kind of game you would keep on your coffee table to intrigue guests, but I love it in the classroom! For early finishers, this is the perfect activity to be done alone. The player uses problem solving skills to "solve" this puzzle. My students are hooked! Many of my students in the past few years have been able to complete this game...I have not, but I keep trying!

My grandson gave me one of these that he got handmade in Bali. I bought this one for a friend who loves games. You will play this game over and over trying to get better. No matter how you play it has been impossible for me to get down to just one marble.
Kids also love this game.

I got this for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas, and it was an instant hit. Everyone in the family (from my 6 year old son to the grandparents) has tried it out many times over. The concept is simple enough for a small child, but the goal of eliminating as many marbles as possible is a real brain teaser even for puzzle-loving adults. Better still, it's attractive enough that it looks nice sitting out on the coffee table, so when guests come they also start toying around with it, trying to solve the puzzle. Definitely a worthy purchase!

This was a favorite game from my childhood and I wanted to upgrade to better version for family and friends to enjoy. It is beautiful enough to leave out on a table, but also portable to take on family trips. Great game for every family to own.
