2.0 out of 5 stars Quality problems, August 16, 2008

This review is from: Mini Keyboard 11.46"(L) (Electronics)
I have owned a miniature SolidTek 11.5 inch keyboard for years and loved it. Nice key action, and it's just the right size for use on the arm of an easy chair. But my old SolidTek was slowly dying and I needed a replacement. I searched 'SolidTek' on Amazon and up poped this keyboard, which as best as I could tell from low-res photo looked just like my keyboard, so I bought it.

Let me list the quality issues:

1) Hard to believe I know, but Amazon does not specify the connector for this keyboard. There's no mention of whether its PS2 or USB. I knew this before I ordered, but I knew that PS2 versions were generally a few dollars cheaper, so based on price I guessed it would be PS2. Wrong, it came with a USB connector. However, I would caution that since Amazon is not specifying the conector, they may feel free to ship whatever is available.

2) Amazon says this keyboard is made by SolidTek. Really? Neither the box nor the product label (there is no other documentation) identifies the manufacturer as SolidTek. The name on the box is 'ASK-3900' keyboard, and a black mark on the side shows that my particular box contained the black, USB version: 'ASK-3900U'.

3) Keyboard quality: Gone is the nice crisp action of my old SolidTek, replaced by soft mushy key action.

4) Even though I had carefully checked the layout using the fuzzy photo before ordering, I find the new keyboard is slightly different from old SolidTek keyboard. In the left bottom there is an extra key (squeezed in by shortening the space bar), and amazingly this key is a duplicate. It's a second back-slash key. There is also an extra wide bottom border on the new keyboard that my old SolidTek does not have.

The only plus is that with free Amazon shipping this keyboard is somewhat cheaper than other keyboards this size.

Update --- After using this keyboard for a couple of weeks, I'm finding it does the job. The key action while not the best, is acceptable. I found it can be run from a PS/2 port using an inexpensive (male PS/2, female USB) adaptor. I bought mine online from SewellDirect: 'PS/2 to USB keyboard/mouse converter' (six dollars).

Update #2 ---- After six months use the keyboard is already wearing out. The 's' key now takes excess pressure, and the marking on the 't' key is totally gone and the marking on the 'r' key is partially gone.

Update #3 ---- After only 10 months, it's become unusable as now the space bar needs to be hit hard.
