2.0 out of 5 stars There's better out there, May 4, 2010

This review is from: SolidWorks 2010 Bible (Paperback)
The product description states, "The only guide you need to learn the leading 3D solid modeler program, SolidWorks." Not entirely true. The bible covers a LOT of information - some important, some not so. A lot of the information - I've seen on blogs and in the SolidWorks Help / Tutorials.

He doesn't use the default interface windows (toolbar locations) - so it was confusing to me as a new user. I was comparing the book to my system. I hit a hot key by mistake which activated a selection filter, it took over 5 minutes before I realize that a filter was active and 5 minutes looking through the book to deactivate it. I gave up looking and blogged the question. The book index provided no help - filters page 1048 - featuremanger - no selection filters. This is a reference book?

Try to find information on an eDrawing using the index? There is no mention of the Universial Joint Mate or Add-ins. No examples or tutorials of the Curve feature, Equation Driven Curve, etc. - just definitions from SolidWorks. The more I look through the book, the more it does not have the items I'm looking for. THE ONLY GUIDE - NO WAY!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak for a new user, May 20, 2010
This review is from: SolidWorks 2010 Bible (Paperback)
This is one of three Solidworks books which I purchased in the past two months. The book lacks a multimedia CD, doesn't provide simple step by step instructions, the actual tutorials are few and the author assumes a lot throughout the book on the software and terminology.

I couldn't open the files directly from the CD using SolidWorks. I was informed that for some of my confusion; it was due to older illustrations in the book (SolidWorks 2008, 2009 and 2010). For a newbie who is trying to following every word and step; this is confusing at times. I would not recommend this book for a new user.

2.0 out of 5 stars FrustrationWorks 2010, January 2, 2011
This review is from: SolidWorks 2010 Bible (Paperback)
After finishing the official SW essentials class, I wanted to expand my knowledge so Solidworks 2010 Bible seemed like a good choice. It's clear the author knows SW very well, however, I feel the author has forgot what it's like being a beginner with this complex software. Matt does a good job of pointing out best practices and pitfalls, but most of this will be lost on the beginner. Anyone trying to learn from this book will be overwhelmed very quickly.

I believe SW is best learned by example and that is where this book falls short. Most of the tutorials are exercises in frustration. They are difficult to follow, brief and leave too much ambiguity for the reader. The tutorials only cover a small portion of the books content, leaving the reader to fend for himself.

I can see this book being useful as a general reference only after you've learned the subject matter. Go take an official SW essentials class. You will learn more in 5 days of class than 5 months with this book. Yes, you will spend almost 100 times the price of this book on the essentials class, however, you will learn more than this book could ever provide and avoid the frustration.

Other thoughts: This book should have had a companion book for tutorials. One book for text and the second book for tutorials. This would have provided ample room for in-depth tutorials on all the subject matter.

I am currently using this book in an advanced SW class. The tutorials are useless. They are so badily writen that they are impossible to follow. Lombard leaves out key instructions needed to complete the tutorials and actually understand what he's trying to teach you.

It should be called the Solid Works 2010 Comic Book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Technical books need readable figures in Kindle, September 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SolidWorks 2010 Bible (Paperback)
I really, really wanted to buy this book for Kindle. I even downloaded a sample, where I discovered the same problem that caused me to return a similar technical book in Kindle - figures are too small and there is no reasonable way to zoom them. I know that some technical Kindle books do have enlarged figures, but I don't think this is one of them.

Someday I'd love to see ALL books available for Kindle, with the graphics size problem FIXED. There's no good technical reason for the problem.

I can't blame Kindle for the content that the publisher provides them. (I do blame them for no graphics zoom capability in Kindle for PC, a terrible non-feature..)

What a boon it would be for users of technical books to have them available on Kindle, with graphics zoom capabilities that would allow even the poorly sighted among us to look closely! Some day.

I've taken several of the SW classes, so I have plenty of reference books on how to do most things but this book gives you a wealth of details not covered in those books, it's definitely a must have, "go to", reference.

The most comprehensive book on Solidworks I have seen. Essential for anyone using or contemplating using Solidworks. Great for learning your way around this solid modelling software and as a reference book once you are up and running. Don't try to live without it!
