5.0 out of 5 stars Amanda REALLY ROCKS
Amanda Overmyer really ROCKS in this new CD album and each song is different and I never get tired of listening to it. Each song in this album is as good or better than anything she ever sang on American Idol. Buy it and see for yourself. AWESOME!

3.0 out of 5 stars Debut album delivers what you expect...and maybe too much of it.
Amanda Overmyer's debut album can best be summed up as, "It is what it is".

Not picked up by the major labels after stint on American Idol (though she did get far enough along to cut some studio versions of her Idol songs), Amanda has taken it upon herself to get her music to her fans. Overall they will be happy because the album certainly reflects Amanda's...

Amanda Overmyer's debut album can best be summed up as, "It is what it is".

Not picked up by the major labels after stint on American Idol (though she did get far enough along to cut some studio versions of her Idol songs), Amanda has taken it upon herself to get her music to her fans. Overall they will be happy because the album certainly reflects Amanda's style.

Her inevitable comparison to the gravel-voiced legend, Janis Joplin is certainly solidified here, though she obviously made a conscious choice to not cover any Joplin tunes (as she did to get on idol). Fans will like the fact that every track is some form of hard-driving, blues/rock/southern-rock fusion that works well with her distinctive voice.

This is also the problem. The album is not nuanced and listening through all the tracks leaves you hearing a certain sameness...there is definitely no risk-taking here. That is not to say that there are not some great songs on album. The amusing "Varmint Rifle" and "Fail To Compromise" show what Amanda does well.

On the flip side, the repetitive "Call Your Mamma" as well as the over-all sound of the album-left me with a feeling I had not had previously; that a little Amanda goes a long way.

I would say that, bottom line, fans will like the album because there are no surprises - you get a lot of what makes Amanda Amanda. The undecided or the mildly-interested might feel like they are hearing a version of the same thing over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actual Rock 'n' Roll, July 6, 2009
This review is from: Solidify (Audio CD)
Let's face it, American Idol is a joke in terms of discovering musicians. They discover exactly what the title claims: idols. It's not about music. It's about marketing.

Apparently, the marketing wonks (excuse me, "judges") saw someone else when Amanda Overmyer showed up. They thought they saw someone they could turn into a star (pronounced "stahhhhhh"). But Amanda Overmyer is not a star. She's a musician. She plays music she loves because she loves it and on "Solidify", she loves it all over the place.

This is a VERY solid debut from one of the few true talents that American Idol ever presented and one of the few real rock 'n' roll works I've heard in a long, long time. They are all original songs and fast or slow, they rock hard. If you like your music hard and sweaty, there's a lot to like here.

This young woman has a lot to be proud of.

It is what it is..... Well, I agree with that, but what it is is great pure rock and roll. She is one of the best female rockers to come along in quite some time, and one of the best to ever appear on Idol... She should have won hands down IMHO... Anyway, the whole album rocks, in her bluesy style. Some stand outs I thought were Play On, Fight like a Son, Call your Mama, and Lay it Down, but there is not a "skipper" on the entire CD, they are ALL great songs!
