A strong, strong debut., June 30, 2004
This review is from: Soliloquy (Audio CD)
Okay, maybe I'm a smidge biased because they included a remix I did on the disc, but keep in mind I only did the remix because the song itself was so strong that I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
I've probably listened to this album more than anyone short of the band, and I do have to say, it's a really solid, solid disc. The programming is nicely nuanced, and a refreshing change from a lot of the straight kick-drum-and-arpeggiator electropop formula that seems to be dominating the market these days. The vocals are strong, clear, in-tune (which sadly also seems to be unusual for a lot of music these days), and somewhat reminiscent of Information Society.
Another nice feature of this disc is that the songwriting doesn't follow a strict formula either. There's no Depeche Mode/Erasure cloning going on here; this isn't an album of mopey brood-pop or chirpy bleep-pop. Instead you get original, creative songwriting that works as a cohesive whole.
All in all, it's a great first disc for any band.
