Product Description

The Solis SL70 stands out as a stellar performer in the crowded world of home espresso machines. The Solis SL70 (and big brother SL90) is designed for the espresso purist. What is an espresso purist" Simply put, it is a person who wants a machine that can heat the water at the perfect temperatures, apply enough pressure on the water to force it through the grinds in the portafilter, has a portafilter that can handle the pressure well and maintain the heat of the shot, and lets the user control all the other variables. The Solis Crema SL 70 is a purist's machine. The SL 70 has all the features you would want in a traditional espresso machine. A huge 3.2 quart (3 liter) reservoir. A high performance pump that gives you up to 19 bars of pressure (280 psi). A heavy brass boiler ensures optimum brewing temperature. A solid brass portafilter that helps retain the heat of your shot through the brewing process. A steam nozzle that swivels and accomodates most cup and frothing pitcher sizes. An area on the top of the machine to heat your cups. The SL 70 features all of this and much more. Solis adds other niceties to the SL 70. Convenience items like a portafilter that can also take espresso pods (with a special insert, included). A drip tray that raises and lowers depending on your cup size. There's also a built in tamper that fits the filter inserts perfectly, eliminating the need for you to buy a third party tamper. Last but certainly not least, the SL 70 features a very modern yet elegant design and a metal housing completes the package. But where does the Solis really stand out? It is in the finer aspects of the design that truly impact performance. In a world where espresso machine manufacturers under estimate the abilities of the home barista, many take away control from the consumer in the name of convenience. Solis designs for performance, but not at the expense of convenience. Consider the available non-pressurized filter insert. Pressurized filters are helpful ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid machine., November 21, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought it on impulse after reading a few online reviews. It's the first expensive coffee machine I've bought.

Heating up the machine in the morning takes a couple of minutes. Flick switch, hit another switch, turn the steam wand. Wait a few seconds. Close wand, close switch. Load up the coffee and go brush my teeth while it heats up.

When I come back, put cup underneath and flick the switch. Takes a few seconds. It's pretty good coffee. The water reservoir in the back lasts a week. Drip tray is generously-sized, it's easy to clean.

Tastes good.

I am somewhat regretting not spending more to get the SL90. The electronic controls for a full-automatic would have been more convenient for the other members of the family.

This review is from: Solis Crema SL 70 Espresso Machine Black
I've had many espresso machines over the years. This is the first that has lasted more than 18 months. It's a work horse. Never had a problem. It's consistant, and makes great shots. I'm anal about doing it all myself instead of wanting it automated. That is why I went for the 70 instead of the 90. If it ever dies, (6 years and counting of daily usage) I will definately get another one exactly the same. Solis is a good solid brand.

2.0 out of 5 stars Expect repairs, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Solis Crema SL 70 Espresso Machine Black
I loved this machine for 5 years. It's consistent, easy to use, and great to learn on. But be vigilant to never, ever, ever leave the machine on when not in use or the switches will likely burn out. I lost a total of 4 switches over the years. Even tried to put heavier-duty switches in, but that didn't work for long either. After 3 different trips to the shop, I gave up. I would suggest saving your money and making the leap to the Rancilio Silvia or a different sturdier machine.
