I first bought Solitaire as a record in 1956, not as a fan of Jazz but as a new fan of Erroll Garner. His phrasing and haunting melodies on this release are pure gold. If you have no other, this is the only Garner you will ever need.

To say that this album is not representative of Erroll Garner is like saying "In The Wee Small Hours" is not representative of Sinatra. Maybe it would be better stated to say this is one of the many facets of Erroll Garner. Let's face it......this is a lineup of ballads and Erroll certainly had a flowery style on that type of material........some people might have called it romanticism.Regardless, if you like great piano and especially ballads, you |
