More About the Author

In 1962 I came to the U.S. from England, where I'd written comedy scripts and was personal scriptwriter for a popular British comedian. Interested in the occult for over sixty years, in the past fifty years I've had over fifty books published (fiction and non-fiction), with nearly two million copies in print and translated into seventeen foreign languages. I've received awards for my work and had books featured in several national book clubs. I was Technical Director for movies, working with Orson Wells, John Carradine, Vincent Price and William Friedkin (director of The Exorcist). Of Romany descent, I'm an authority on Gypsies and have written several books on them. I've lectured at colleges and universities and been the subject of articles in newspapers and magazines: New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, New York Sunday News, National Observer, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Look Magazine, Cosmopolitan, True, and others.

I've appeared on national television and radio talk shows and been on BBC-TV, England, RAI-TV, Italy, and CBC-TV, Canada. I appeared extensively on stage in England and played small character parts in movies in America. I taught courses at colleges and universities and have been a featured speaker at conferences and workshops. I'm listed in reference works including Contemporary Authors, Who's Who In America, Men of Achievement, and International Authors' and Writers' Who's Who.

Recent books include Atomic Sunrise, The Spirit Book, Buckland's Book of Spirit Communications, Golden Illuminati, and Solitary Seance. A DVD version of my Wicca video has also recently been released: Rebirth of the Old Religion. A prolific author, I just signed a multi-book contract with Penguin/Berkley for a Victorian mystery series. Today I live on a farm in north-central Ohio. Photo Credit: Gregory Ford

Buckland has been writing for a long time. His contributions have been significant but among his many works this one is a gem. I love the vintage packaging - I'm a sucker for a great cover and book design but this book would be of tremendous value even if it came as a bare manuscript. I found his instructions clear, easy to follow and understand. I'm not a "tools" type of person myself but I do use them from time to time and this book added considerably to my appreciation of them. An experienced, seasoned medium may not enjoy the book as much as a novice but I would recommend it to anyone regardless of the person's level of experience because it is a valuable reference work.

Solitary Séance by Raymond Buckland is a guide to help others communicate with spirits on their own. The various types of communication tools mentioned are just a guide and gives basic information for the main methods used in spirit communication.

Solitary Séance is a book about communicating with spirits. Buckland doesn't believe that you have to go through a medium to do it, and also shares a little secret - everyone can do this!

Each of the types of communication methods discussed is given a basic bare bones type of an intro but that is all that really needed to be included in this book. If someone tries something and they don't like it or don't find that type of method useful, they can just move on to the next and try it. If they happen to find a few ways to communicate with spirits that they really like, there are plenty of other books available that they could research that specific topic further.

I've read quite a few books that have mentioned all of the methods described in this book with the exception of one. Dominoes. I never knew that it was possible to use Dominoes similar to how Tarot cards are used. Very interesting!

Overall, I found the book to contain quite a good amount of information without going into too much detail in any of the areas. I think that this would be a fantastic book for those who are just starting out in this area to read to help them further their journey into communicating with spirits. If you are like me and have read up on the topic, you may be surprised to find things you didn't know before too. I highly recommend it.

* Thank you to the publisher of Solitary Séance, Llewllyn, for providing me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book just touches the surface of Spiritualism and spirit communication. Although there are some good points, the book pretty much seemed stretched out to make it appear like there was more in it. Several of the chapters are more glossaries for dreams and Spiritualism.

There are fact postings throughout in a a large frame. I actually read this book in about an hour and a half. I expected a larger book, but when my copy came in the mail, I was surprised how tiny the actual book is. There's just not much to it.

If it's just a phase of curiosity you're are going through, get the book. But if you want something more in depth about Spiritualism and communication...look elsewhere.

This is good for the introduction of spirit comunications. I like how the book gets into the big question is there any danger? and constructing the egg of protection right a way. So many pepole have had problems with not knowing enough about protecton . I also like the chapter on tarot. It was a big question I often asked myself how can I use the tarot If i am in a haunted location. That chapter offers me some advice for useing one of my favorite tools should I happen to buy a haunted house or something.

If you have questions about various methods used to contact spirits, this book is a good place to start. It is like a primer for contacting spirits.

This book was pretty good over all although I felt as though it was more of a "beginners guide" and covered a large number of topics only in a brief way. I wanted more details and more info and the author did provide many references in the book which I will certainly research for more enlightenment. Perhaps even another one of his books. For me, this book is a good reference guide with lots of good snips of stuff I can come back to as I continue my spiritual journey

I liked it. Nothing special. It is a common sense approach that requires practice like anything else. If you want to do it, practice, if you want to know about it, it tells you.
