This review is from: Solitude (Audio CD)
This is a nice little collection of recordings Al Hibbler made in the late 40's and early 50's. Most of these are probably songs he performed with Duke Ellington, and although the liner notes state they were made after he left the Duke and before he signed with Decca, the arrangements are very reminiscent of that style. Al sounds very smooth and laid back here, almost a crooner and there is little of his cockney imitation or his infamous "uh-uh," but an enjoyable listen for any Hibbler fan just the same. There is also an early recording of "Trees" and a humorous ditty called "Fat And Forty" which lists Al as the songwriter! Please realize these are original recordings and the sound quality is also reminiscent of that era, but well preserved.
