Editorial Reviews

Soundtrack to the 2010 motion picture. Mike Patton, moved by the Paolo Giordano novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers and having contributed music to the movie of the same name, has created a 16-track release that boasts some of the most contemplative and stirring music of his multi-faceted career, with Patton describing the release as a personal "sonic departure".

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent November 2, 2011
By D.C.E
Format:MP3 Music
On the back of Mondo Cane this is a large step in yet another different direction for Patton. At first listen this is a deep score loaded with diverse emotional directions that is both challenging and yet has a well considered continuity from start to finish. The comparative subtlety of vocals (singing or otherwise) compared with most other Patton related projects is the biggest difference here, as is the sonic landscape itself - in short, it feels "softer". As a regular Patton listener, kudos to the man for having the balls to continually redefine himself as an artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Direction for an Artist Without Limits February 7, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I find continuity with this album and his broader portfolio of work. This is evolutionary step overall coalescing his entire body of work with an emphasis on composition and arrangements than any vocals. Which are there but buried in the shadows of the various scores. This seems more mature in as much as he seems less interested in pushing the bounds musical expression rather emphasizing the nuances and a simpler beauty discovered in his repertoire of music.

This album continues to grow on me and seems appreciation grows with each listen. I'm delighted when it comes in rotation on my playlist's and serves as wonderful background music to when creating my own art.

Overall, Mike Patton is an artist par excellence. His range seems unrivaled and beyond pedestrian comprehension, again. Bravo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Drone January 27, 2013
By DPG
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have had this and not listened to it much. After having a child I decided to download a lot of drone and trance music such as Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Stars of the Lid, Dead Texan and others. I put it on to promote a solemn and sleepy environment. I would put Solitutde of Prime Numbers in line with some of the darker drone music that I have been introducing myself to.

I don't profess to be an expert (on anything) but this album has continuity, expression, and mostly a calm. Though as you would expect it also has tension at times. This is the type of thing you can play and either pay close attention to or turn off with.
