With Lorca, Machado is considered Spain's greatest poet of the 20th century. Other works have been translated ( Selected Poems , LJ 10/1/82; Times Alone , LJ 6/1/83), but this volume represents "the cornerstone of Machado's entire literary production." It shows Machado as a poet of loss"Everywhere I have seen/ caravans of sadness,/ proud and melancholy men,/ drunk with black shadow"who also celebrates the folklife of his native Andalusia"Beauty of the countryside barely in bloom/ and mystical spring!" A generous introduction offers insight into Machado's literary background, and though the translations emphasize "the sense of the original," they still manage to animate the soul that lives in Machado's work.
