5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic record!
Having been a fan of Barney Kessel for many years, I was really glad to see this fantastic record being reissued as a cd. As far as I know it's the only solo recording Barney ever made, and all the arrangements are just amazing! Just a few seconds and you know it's Barney playing, the real sign of a real artist. Buy this cd, you will treasure it for the rest of your life...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ernie Holmes
I couldn't agree more that Barney Kessel is one of our greatest jazz guitarists in America. I find fault, however in the engineering of the record. I do not know if it was on the original recording, but this was driven too hard causing clipping distortion that is horrible to listen to.
I have noticed this same condition on other recordings by Barney. What a shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great solo jazz guitar album, October 30, 2005

This one is under-rated. This is a great solo jazz guitar album. It's very accessable and easy to listen to. I wish he made another solo album in fact. He doesn't take alot of single line solos or noodle alot, which to me is a plus. I'm not yet familiar with his other work, but this album is a must have for solo jazz guitar fans. Guitarists who are into the chord melody style should give this one a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, August 4, 2006

This is a great album. I really enjoy the clear melodies and different styles (ballad, fast swing etc). I would defintely reccomend buying it if you like the solo guitar style. Similar to a Joe Pass or Tuck Andress solo album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Check out the pickup., February 6, 2011

That pickup on Charlie's guitar is a 1936 Charlie CHristian pickup (from a Gibson ES 150) made of rare earth cobalt and copper. It's said to have the best tone ever for a guitar pickup. Especially jazz, of course. Barney installed it into a Gibson 40's ES 350 guitar, which in and of itself, is a fabulous ax. That alone is worth the price of this album, and I can really hear the sound on Happy Little Song. Now to find out what type of strings Barney used....
