Book Description

May 1, 2008
Solo to England represents Barry Markham s absorbing account of his epic journey in a Tiger Moth plane from Australia to England. From his grand departure from his hometown of Perth to his joyous reunion in Cambridge with wife Carol after 60 days (35 of which he spent flying), Solo to England tells of eventful travelling through 16 countries and 35 airports. The book gives a clear hands-on account of the technicalities involved in flying a World War II aeroplane and is complemented by the author s complete attention to small details, to the strict adherence to the daily, and sometimes hourly, weather reports which determined the day s flight plan or aborted flight. These vital things literally made the difference between life and death. Barry describes how support from family and friends can strengthen morale as well as assistance from complete strangers: above all I shall never forget the dozens of people I met from many different ethnic backgrounds and beliefs, who seemed to possess, almost without exception, the inherent desire to want to help a fellow human being from the opposite side of the world who was on a strange journey.

About the Author

Barrymore Markham, known as Barry, was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1947. He attended Wesley College and as a mature student received the Master of Education degree from the University of Western Australia (UWA). He runs his own Real Estate business in Shenton Park. His interest in flying, and Tiger Moths in particular, stemmed from his late father, Percy, a World War II RAAF pilot. A solo crossing of Australia in his newly restored Tiger Moth in 1992, combined with a passionate interest in the exploits of solo aviators of the 1920s and 30s, were the catalyst for Barry to one day carry out his own international journey. His dream was realised in 1998 when he flew his beloved Margery - named after his late mother - solo from Australia to England. He remains actively involved in recreational flying, and his other interests include vintage cars and motorcycles, and a farm at York. He resides with his wife Carol in Floreat Park, in the western suburbs of Perth. They have four adult children and nine grandchildren.
