Book Description

'Solo Flight' takes the reader into the skies on the journey of a lifetime.

Alone in the cockpit of a tiny two-seat aircraft, the author gazed down upon both the raw beauty of Australia's most remote regions and the spectacular harbours and city skylines. From the first stirring to fly around the island continent, to the moment when the propeller fell silent for the last time, the effort, experience and emotion of this very special flight is revealed.

Nearly 200 images bring this story to life, while well chosen words paint an equally vivid canvas. Beyond the 7,500 miles that passed beneath his wings, the author tells a tale of remote communities, forgotten heroes and family bonds that are stronger than life and death.

Now in 'Solo Flight' he shares every heartbeat of this magnificent adventure.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is so refreshing to read something in general aviation from someone that genuinely loves flying, and on such an amazing journey. I bought the book and read it immediately, not stopping until I had finished.

Each chapter details one leg of the journey (after the initial chapters on the planning etc), and is very well written, describing the beauty of both the flight, and the landscape, admirably. Owen definitely has a way with words!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story December 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Owen's done it again. He takes the reader not only on a ride around our wide brown land, but also through the planning stages and the amount of work involved in getting such a venture off the ground. Owen combines the best of both worlds for an aviation geek like me: not only can he fly and fly well, but he can also relate his experiences eloquently, putting the reader in the copilots's seat. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and enjoyable tale January 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have come to expect a high standard of writing from Owen Zupp, and this book did not disappoint.  This lovingly crafted tale of a wonderful journey made me feel like I was right there alongside Owen in his Jabiru.

If you have ever had even the slightest urge to undertake your own epic - or modest - journey, Owen's tale is sure to provide extra inspiration. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it April 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an aircrft enthusiast my view is totally unrepresentatve, but I loved it as it reminded me of those rollicking adventure stories I read as a boy. I was engrossed in the trip and impressed with Owen's meticulous attention to detail. As they say: "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots". As well as being a great read, it should be required reading for any trainee pilot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zupp takes you along on a great flying adventure March 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this, the second book by Zupp that I have read, was excellent. As a former private pilot I found that the author captures the fun of flying. In addition, I have a fascination for the history and vast expanses of outback Australia, and the book describes the landscape and the people he met along the way so well.

Once I started this book I literally could not put it down and stayed up most of the night reading until I had finished it.

One suggestion - as you read also have a look at the places he mentions using Google Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're the ghost looking over his shoulder January 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Once again, Owen Zupp's writing has picked me up & brought me along on one of his flights, but this time it's the series of flights that took him around Australia to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Flying a Jabiru light general aviation aircraft on his own, Owen visited a number of locations around Australia that had current and/or historical relevance to aviation within our vast island continent.

"Solo Flight" shows you the inspirations and planning that helped make the flight possible as well as taking you along on the journey "there and back again."

As I'd come to expect from his "50 Tales of Flight" book, Owen's writing is able to give you the sensation that you are there with him on his adventure, sharing his experiences both in the air and on the ground. His style is flowing and conveys just the right balance of information so you understand his meaning & intent without requiring a background in aviation or knowledge of Australia's landscape & history.

While Owen's flight was primarily a fund-raising venture in support of the RFDS, the entire flight was also a bonding experience with his father's past experiences. Many of the locations Owen visited were not only rich in aviation history, they were also special places for Owen's father. As his flight progresses, Owen frequently encounters triggers that bring memories of his father to the fore, whether hearing a song, seeing an aircraft his father used to fly or standing on the parade ground at Pt Cook.

The book also conveys moments when Owen is reminded of his own career's early days when he was a young commercial pilot building hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars All that, and a history lesson too. January 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Owen's latest book has something for just about everyone. As he weaves his way around Australia, the reader is woven into not only the history of aviation in Australia, but his personal history as well. As someone who inherited the aviation gene from his parents (and who also lost a father to cancer), I felt like I was sitting in the right seat on the journey.

With a busy life, I often find it hard to read more than a few pages at a time of any book, but kept finding an excuse to go back and read "just one more chapter". There was no cliff-hanger and no plot twist, but I found myself compelled to find out what that next day would be like.
