This is not the book to learn rock n roll as one mistaken reviewer thought.
I have the 1976 print of this book. I learnt to play classical guitar with it, all nine of my teachers recommended it and all these years I have returned to it over and over. The exercises are still good for brushing up on my technique and the pieces range from easy to intermediate, providing a bit of challenge and excitement as you assemble your skills.

I bought the book on the recomendation of my guitar tutor, and so far - I'm half way through - I have found the pace to be fine.
Each small step is accompanied by advice and explanations. It isn't for those who are in a massive rush to excel at playing the guitar, but for those of us who have enough patience, it's perfectly acceptable.
The exercises are often duets, so unless you have a tutor or someone who can play the other part, you won't be able to hear the tunes as they are supposed to be.
There are 2 cassettes to accompany the book with all the pieces recorded in 2 tracks, so you can swich one channel off and just hear the accompaniment, but I haven't yet located them. I'm still looking!

If you want to learn how to play classical guitar this is the book for you. Its simply amazing and although Im not quite complete.. Im sure I will buy his solo guitar 2. I have tried learning out of 3 other books and none of them stack up to this one.. Solo guitar playing is also nice if your working with a teacher because it has music that the teacher can play for some songs to go along with yours. Even though most these songs sound amazing good for the simplicity .. it is really cool to hear someone playing along with you. but alone it is still a great book too.
