5.0 out of 5 stars The only book to learn classical guitar by
This is not the book to learn rock n roll as one mistaken reviewer thought.

I have the 1976 print of this book. I learnt to play classical guitar with it, all nine of my teachers recommended it and all these years I have returned to it over and over. The exercises are still good for brushing up on my technique and the pieces range from easy to intermediate, providing a...

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is discouraging!
I bought this book as an eager beginner to music. What a mistake! This instructor keeps reminding you, whether directly or through his piecemeal instructional method, that it will take you years to be able to "correctly" play the guitar. The tone of this book is very formal, pedantic, and painfully slow. Very, very boring. All in all, I guess this book would be...

4.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good, May 13, 2001

This review is from: Solo Guitar Playing Book 1 (Paperback)
I bought the book on the recomendation of my guitar tutor, and so far - I'm half way through - I have found the pace to be fine.

Each small step is accompanied by advice and explanations. It isn't for those who are in a massive rush to excel at playing the guitar, but for those of us who have enough patience, it's perfectly acceptable.

The exercises are often duets, so unless you have a tutor or someone who can play the other part, you won't be able to hear the tunes as they are supposed to be.

There are 2 cassettes to accompany the book with all the pieces recorded in 2 tracks, so you can swich one channel off and just hear the accompaniment, but I haven't yet located them. I'm still looking!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing, January 15, 2001

If you want to learn how to play classical guitar this is the book for you. Its simply amazing and although Im not quite complete.. Im sure I will buy his solo guitar 2. I have tried learning out of 3 other books and none of them stack up to this one.. Solo guitar playing is also nice if your working with a teacher because it has music that the teacher can play for some songs to go along with yours. Even though most these songs sound amazing good for the simplicity .. it is really cool to hear someone playing along with you. but alone it is still a great book too.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best classical guitar books, February 11, 2005
This review is from: Solo Guitar Playing Book 1 (Paperback)
This is an excellent classical guitar book, that has enough material for a year of study. Can be used by beginner or intermediate level players. I purchased it for the classical guitar lessons at our music school.

All in all, I guess this book would be a perfect choice if you consider yourself to be a "serious" student of the guitar, and you don't mind spending twelve months slowly progressing to playing stiff, strained renditions of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", or like fare. But if you're like the vast majority of aspiring guitar players who just want to learn how to play old Rolling Stones licks, look elsewhere. This book will only frustrate you and discourage you from learning to play the guitar.
