5.0 out of 5 stars Obscure 70s Prog, August 22, 2007
This review is from: Solo (Audio CD)
Its likely that very few North Americans have heard of Kaipa. Not even most of those who lived in the day when progressive rock was daily fare on college and "underground" FM stations are likely to have heard them then. Prog rock airplay on this side of the pond was limited mostly to bands whose work was in English, and that's a shame. Had we had the chance to hear Kaipa then, it is likely that budding guitar guru Roine Stolt and master keyboardist Hans Lundin would be household names today.
Though I like the entire CD, I naturally have my favorite cuts. These are the inspired opener Den Skrattande Grevinnan, the dreamy Vissan I Sommaren, the relaxing Taigan, the soaring Respektera Min Varld, the majestic En Igelkotts Dod, and the epic Total Forvirring. You'll find the last half of Sist Pa Plan a stunner if you keep in mind that prog was in its infancy when it was recorded.
Technological progress and the reissue of Kaipa's obscure 1970s work give prog fans old and new the opportunity to hear some excellent music most of us would have missed had Kaipa not resurrected itself as a working band. If you are a prog fan open to a little musical adventure, then I highly recommend that you add Solo to your music library. Then pick up the rest of their 70s output if you have not already done so.
