5.0 out of 5 stars This will give you endless pleasure..., April 4, 2002
This review is from: Solo Piano Works (Audio CD)
Ahhhhh, Ravel! In my opinion, the greatest composer who ever lived (although fellow Aussie Carl Vine might inherit that mantle eventually). This music is just so listenable, and no matter how many times I listen to this album I can never get enough. There is always something new and interesting in Ravel's music to delight the listener, no matter how many times it is heard. Lortie's playing is sensitive and idiomatic, and although he is outshone by other pianists in certain works (Martha Argerich's Gaspard de la Nuit is, in my opinion, far superior to Lortie's nonetheless very commendable performance), this is the complete set that I feel has the most to offer. Lortie's technique is unfailingly precise and delicate, and he is an absolute magician with tone colour. Fine piano playing, absolutely peerless music, what more could a music lover ask for?
