Larry Willis lends his considerable talents to 9 solo piano pieces which are given such readings that you do not have to be a fan of gospel to enjoy. Yet they resonate deeply. The sense of spirituality is there, in a very profound way that speaks not only of God, but of creativity and piece. "Motherless Child is given a wonderful reading. "This Little of Mine" is absolutley beautiful. A very unique reading. I sat there mesmerized through this. "Take My Hand Precious Lord" renders a view of the vast horizons and the mysteries that lie beyond.

"Come Sunday" is given a treatment that would bring a smile to Ellington's face. This one is thoroughly explored. "Sweet Hour of Prayer" is my particular favorite. It has a break of day feeling to it. It promises something profoundly better.

The pieces are all ballads and the pace is languid. Yet if I were to recommend an album of spirituals to someone non-sectarian or for someone looking for something profound, this would be one of those recordings.
