Easy reading but not much in content,
By A Customer
This review is from: Solo Success: 100 Tips for Becoming a $100,000-a-Year Freelancer (Paperback)
This book may be a good inspiration but it doesn't help much in terms of business start-up procedures. The tips given by the author are too commonsense. Not recommended for people who already have some knowledge in business. The tips are already so understandable that I feel like I'm wasting my time reading the explaination. Not broad enough for people interested in the fields other than media &advertising.

I'm launching my own freelance marketing communications business within a few weeks, and this book answered almost all of my questions while addressing some issues I hadn't yet considered. (And I thought I had done my homework!) Perlstein makes the thought of starting one's own business much less intimidating. I'm so glad I read this book, and I would highly recommend it to anyone getting the itch to go out on their own.

The ultimate freelancer's guide,
By A Customer
This review is from: Solo Success: 100 Tips for Becoming a $100,000-a-Year Freelancer (Paperback)
Instead of spending a ton of money on the dozen or so books on freelancing and writing and consulting that you'd have to buy to equal what's in "Solo Success," just go ahead and buy it! Rarely do you find all the answers and all your "what if" freelance questions answered in one volume. But that's what Perlstein has done. It's the type of book you'll read once, but you'll find yourself going back to again and again and again. With it's short chapter structure, you can open it randomly to any page and find a gem of wisdom to use during the day. You won't keep it on your bookshelf, you'll keep it next to your computer or in your briefcase. Well-written, breezy, entertaining, and packed with information. Think of it as having a mentor there to help you all the time. It's that good.

As a future freelancer, I really appreciated this book. Unlike other theoretical "academic-type" books, this one was full of real-life examples and techniques. It is easy to read and my copy is already dog-eared. Highly recommended.

Solo Success can mean big money,

This review is from: Solo Success: 100 Tips for Becoming a $100,000-a-Year Freelancer (Paperback)
I've been freelancing as a technical writer for a few years and find my own state of mind was very much the same as what Mr. Perlstein says. Most of the tips given by the author are not a commonsense at all. There's a lot of things I simply didn't know. What I didn't like in this book was Mr. Perlstein's tendency to engage in endless, ethnically rich lyrical deviations about his grandma tales and his rather extended...family. But the 'Solo Success' is well-written, entertaining, and packed with practical tips and useful ideas. So I hope to return to the book now and then. This book is a good inspiration for everyone who plans to work solo...

A great book for anyone striking out on his or her own.,

Mr. Perlstein has a flair for expresing himself in a succinct yet humorous manner. It's an easy book to browse, and I found that the "tips" could be read in any order. I particularly liked the way in which he interwove his personal life experiences with his professional tips. A must read for anyone considering "going solo".

. . . Simply mark whatever you DON'T want to read again! This book is packed with savvy advice from a been-there/done-that professional. Mr. Perlstein blends practical guidance, encouragement and insight with enough personal experience to create a business biography. He answers questions that the pre-freelancer wouldn't even think to ask. I may need to purchase another copy to replace my "yellowed" original!

A crazy librarian I know recommended this book and I was happily surpised when I found Solo Success invaluable. I carried the book around with me everywhere and all I had to do was look at the title to be inspired! It's true too- I may even pass the 100,000 mark this year hopefully with some extra hard work. I'm waiting for the sequal. Thanks David!

Very worthy if you free-lance,

A surprisingly decent book. I've been free-lancing for a few years and find my own state of mind very much in synch with what the author says. There've been three types of such 'mind-matching': something that I've learned from my own experience--and which is good to see confirmed by someone with probably 20 years more of experience; something that I've been sort of ready to realise (but haven't yet) and now--boom--ran into that precisely concept, nicely worded and ready to use--again a confirmation of your own thinking and a bit of time saving. There's also a lot of things I simply didn't know. I presume, I've also ignored a bit due to not being ready and thus glossing over a concept of two, so I plan to return to the book now and then. I'm not sure it's necessary to structure a book as something split in numbered steps, hints, days, or whatever, but that seems to be a universal disease of books like that, so I don't complain--it's goofy but harmless. What I didn't like in the book was the author's tendency to engage in endless, ethnically rich, irrelevant lyrical deviations. I really don't care for his stydying Hebrew at night and all the grandma tales about his rather extended family. He does keep syrupy junk to a minimum, so, overall, I found the book very worthy.
