5.0 out of 5 stars A master and his piano February 20, 2003
Format:Audio CD
This album was recorded in 1954, but not released until 1992.
Each tune is a small masterpiece, a man and his Steinway.
On the other hand it is so demanding listening to these tracks, something unexpected is happening all the time.
The sound quality is quite nice, not exceptional, not poor, somewhere in between. And mono (NOT stereo).
It is nice to see Garner wearing casual clothes, besides you can tell from the pictures that he enjoyed a drink and a cigarette too (most of us knew that already, at least it is now out in the open).
Erroll Garner was the master of the piano, musically this is the most demanding project he has ever dared to approach.
Listen to this and piano-playing will never be the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure for fans May 22, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
This is a real find. As much as I love Erroll in a trio setting there is something deep and personal about his solo performances. I believe the sound samples on this page validate that statement because each track is exquisite. In fact this and Solitaire draw you into Erroll's personal world if not mind.

What amazes me is how this album came to be. Erroll somehow was enticed into visiting WWJ - a Detroit radio station - on July 7, 1954 and laid down these tracks.

I do not know the back story, but as other reviewers have related, he was there for three hours, then left for a gig with his trio later that night. The remarkable part to me is that the emotion with which he charged each tack on this album should have drained him. Instead, he seems full of both energy and inventiveness. I would love to have access to the remaining tracks cut that day, but am grateful that these exist.

This is definitely one of my favorite solo albums by Erroll and one that gets played often when I want to relax and take stock in the beauty in this world. Erroll left behind a rich legacy of that.

5.0 out of 5 stars never seen variety and excellent organization... August 29, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
All songs are excellent. Even a giant of jazz has a good day and a bad day. His improvisation will change time to time. The moment this was recorded must have been the best moment in his life. Never seen variety of expressions, and the good selection of songs are remarkable. This is a master piece of jazz.
