Format: Audio CD
The varied styles of music of the Solomon Islands found on this recording are remarkable. The album begins with an ancient sounding piece similar to the tribal long pipe music of nearby Papua New Guinea. The next track's lullaby is almost Andean, and that is followed by a song in English that seems displaced from the Caribbean. Then a jaunty tune with bamboo percussion and panpipes honors the chief. A strong rhythmic fusion of that primitive tribal style and, well, rock leads us to a mimicking of the natural environment. And so on. Under British rule until 1977, and historically remembered for bloody battles in World War II, the Solomon Islanders must have been exposed to multiple musical idioms, as this album continues to surprise. The enclosed booklet is filled with colored photographs of the musicians in traditional costume and their large and varied sets of panpipes, stomping pipes, and wooden drums. So different from the music of their Polynesian neighbors, this beautiful, happy, contemporary music will delight.

This is absolutely world music at its finest.

The Narasirato Pan Pipers blend their own traditional instruments and music with Western rhythms to great effect. If you listen to this album while doing something else, you'll find your foot tapping to the rhythm during the fast pieces and your head bobbing along to the slower, reggae-feel pieces.

Two of the tracks have English-language vocals too, and actually remind me (in a positive way) of the Gypsy Kings. One of them was a hit in the world music charts too.

The Narasirato Pan Pipers are incredibly talented musicians, especially when you consider that they are recreating a style of music that was banned from their own people early last century. The first and last tracks, and the opening of "Land is my property", are undiluted Are'are tribal music and very dischordant to Western ears, but the rest of the album is so enjoyable.

If you like world music, or you just like excellent music, you absolutely MUST get this album.
