A little known gem,
This review is from: Solomon Northup's Odyssey - (aka "Half Slave, Half Free") [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a movie along the lines of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, but somehow more real, and therefore more moving. Based on a true story, a freed black man in the pre-civil war United States is kidnapped and returned to slavery. The hard choices he makes, the variety of people he meets, they all add up to an interesting film. Avery Brooks is just a wonderful actor and this movie proves he needs to be tapped for more work. If you have not seen this film, please do so. The only reason it's getting four stars is the movie sometimes comes off as pretentious, and I can't stand movies that try to be more than what they are. But Brooks work and the fair treatment of the way the south really operated in that time makes for an interesting film.
