Book Description

We were created in the image and likeness of God. Our souls are eternal, but for a brief time the immortal is hidden within flesh, the timeless joined to the temporary. Trapped in this imperfect state, we strive to find ourselves and our Creator, our souls desperately seeking to become reunited with the Immortal One.

The characters in Solomon’s Porch struggle between the conflicting calls of world and spirit, they reach out for God’s mercy in the darkness. Through my imagination, they do battle with themselves and against evil, stumbling down the path of life making mistakes, sometimes horrific ones.

They ask, as we all do, why are we here? Is there a God and, if so, what does He want from us? What is our destiny? What is happiness? What is love? What is truth? Is it possible to make sense of a world that exalts the most violent, profane, and merciless among us?

The Son of God touched me, reached out to a very determined sinner and atheist, and by His grace is leading me toward salvation. While I by no means have all the answers, I no longer need them. Faith has replaced cynicism. Knowledge of Christ, who He is, and what He has called each of us to become, now lights my way as I patiently await the Lord’s mercy.

Let all who read Solomon’s Porch see if they can find their own road home through the One who assured us that He, and He alone, is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Solomon's Porch brings home an important message to those led astray by the shallow materialism of contemporary society and is an accurate portrayal of life for those seeking Christ in American prisons."
-David Patton MA., Mdiv., Publisher, Dynamis,
St. George Orthodox Cathedral

"One would hope that many a sermon in our churches could be as powerful as this book and as fully consistent with Orthodox Christian teachings." - Elaine Vizard, Book Review Editor, The Bread of Life (Canada)

"Phenomenal. Solomon's Porch is a unique yet powerful book filled with truth. It will keep you rivited and will give you much to ponder."
-Ruth Magan, author of Laughing With Angels,
My Angel, My Friend, and Visions of Earth Beyond

"Solomon's Porch is a must read for anyone who enjoys reading christian fiction. Wid Bastian provides the reader with great character development and a riveting plot line that highlights good versus evil. This book is for all who wish to see a positive alternative to life's hardships."

2.0 out of 5 stars I don't get it October 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Confessing up front - this was a free download. I didn't enjoy reading Solomon's Porch - pretentious writing style and wordiness. I could not get attached to the characters - yes I know - all those other people said it was great so makes me wonder what they saw or found I did not see or find. I'm a fan of Christian inspirational writing -Solomon's Porch is deleted from my kindle library - definitely won't be going back for a second try at finishing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy: In the Bible? November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As this book began it was quite interesting. However, once it got past midway it was really out there, and just not anything of interest to me. I hardly ever do not complete a book but this is one I just gave up on as it did not hold any interest for me. It reminded me of something from a Left Behind type book which is not a genre I am interested in reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Add this book to your reading list October 9, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fast paced read with well developed characters that engages the reader in the only true battle we are all interlocked into - that of the essential battle of good vs. evil - of eternal joys vs. eternal suffering. It underscores that our battles are not with each other, but with a real insidious enemy that would like nothing more than to turn us against each other. Although fictionally based, it underscores that brotherhood can come at the most unlikely times and in the most unlikely places and that there are universal truths that unite us all. I am looking forward to the next installment

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring June 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although I read this book all the way through, I was bored with it. It dragged on way to much and to find out there will be more is almost disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed February 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While the intent of this book may be very good, the actual content leaves a lot to be disired. I have the feeling that the main charater is a personality with an inferority complex and trying to elevate to a status much higher than everyone else. He is not satisfied to be an equal, he wants to have supreme status. I wasted too much time reading the whole thing, thinking it would get better. I only gave it one star because you can't give it no stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many problems February 12, 2013
By Taboo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was enjoying the book initially, but it became apparent that the author was biased against protestants--specifically conservative protestants.

The author implies that the old testament is full of parables. Really? Nowhere in the Bible is that mentioned. Yet the new testament always mentions when a parable is being told.

The author also seems to be anti-military and implies that many of our military enjoy killing children.

The author states that there should be consequences for wrong actions, but in this book there are no consequences if you just are sorry.

Can't really recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't like it February 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There are many good points to this book but I didn't like it. There was too much discussion of demons and angles for me. There were places that suggested incidents were changed/ covered up from what was witnessed in a way that bothered me. There are many good reviews for the book. Everyone looks at things in a different way but I feel this book could cause major confusion for a new believer.

I really enjoyed this book and found it really hard to put the book down at the end of the day. It reminded me in some ways of The Shack.

3.0 out of 5 stars What I expected, but barely
I read the other reviews and agree with most of them. The story is a little preachy. The criticism of organised religion is fair. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Wildly Intriguing, requiring an open mind
Interesting, but very strange writing. However, the ending was so abrupt that I can only surmise a sequel is already being planned.

More About the Author

I am a full time writer - a novelist and screenwriter primarily. While Solomon's Porch is my only published novel to date, I have two other finished books that are waiting in the wings for the right home. My short stories have appeared in places like the Liguorian and Halo magazine.

While I live in St. George, Utah I frequently travel to Southern California to work on screenplays and other projects and to see my two children. I have a daughter in high school and a son who attends San Diego State University. I would rather play golf than eat, I love the ocean and consider God's most perfect creation to be the Hawaiian islands.

My personal and artistic identity is rooted in my Christian faith. On to this base I add my life experiences - as a scholar, businessman, husband and father and also as a penitent sinner who spent years sequestered from the world. I enjoy writing Christian themed morality tales as well as secular suspense novels and literary works that combine spiritual elements with "gritty", real world themes.
