Editorial Reviews

October 21, 2012 marks Sir Georg Soltis centenary and Decca is celebrating this with several important reissues.

Sir Georg was an exclusive Decca artist for 50 years.

In 1947 he signed his first contract with Decca - as a pianist and that same year he made his first record as a conductor (with the Zurich Tonhalle in Beethovens Egmont Overture). His last public concerts took place just a few weeks before his death in 1997 and were with the Zurich Tonhalle.

Solti was a musician with extraordinarily wide musical interests and sympathies and he was without doubt one of the most important opera conductors of the second half of the twentieth century. His legacy of recordings is dominated by opera and his recording of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen - the first ever complete studio recording - has been described as the greatest recording of all time [BBC Music Magazine, January 2012]

5.0 out of 5 stars Solti's Superlative Strauss March 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Recently I wrote a review of the newly issued 33-CD DG box of the complete Strauss operatic output. In the review I made reference to this Solti Decca box and when I went back to check on it at AMAZON, two things surprised me. First off I thought the asking price reasonable (it has 15 CD's and is available from some sellers well below $60) But I was also surprised that this box didn't have a single review. Well, in a way that's understandable as I'm sure that these six recordings are generally regarded as "hors concours". I see that individually most have gained full "Five Star" status here on AMAZON and rightly so. So, my comments will be brief but in the hope that those considering this box will no longer put off buying it. It appeared really as part of Decca's centenary salute to Solti in 2012, and one can never know how much longer it will grace the catalogue. I see where the individual operas are now appearing for the third time as part of Decca's "Originals" program. But this box represents a very good buy as purchasing the six operas separately would be more costly.

Only ARIADNE is not (at least at present) available separately, and in my estimation it is SO good, it's worth the asking price of this box by itself. I have written about Solti's ARIADNE elsewhere on Amazon.

After half a century, Solti's SALOME and ELEKTRA retain their primacy among recorded performances. While a nit or two can be picked over an individual soloist (Marie Collier's Chrysothemis has been bettered elsewhere, but her work is still decent) Solti and Vienna are simply glorious in these scores. They are, really, huge Symphonic Poems with voices, after all, aren't they?
