When I did this trek, I did not imagine in my wildest dreams putting together a book. Nepal, the Himalayas, and Mount Everest are all well documented, both in photos and words. But afterward, pondering the deeply personal nature of the experience, I realized that, like thousands before me, I had been profoundly changed by what I had seen and done. Getting there, hoofing along the trail, step by step, mile by mile -- dry, thirsty, cold -- formed the crux of the experience, more so than actually seeing the great mountain itself. And so I decided to make a record of what occurred in as honest and straightforward a manner as possible. This book is designed to acquaint the ordinary trekker or would-be trekker with what he or she might expect in attempting the Solu-Khumbu trail. It's a tough trek and it's not for everybody -- some people just don't function properly at altitude -- but for those with a desire for a rugged physical outing in the most spectacular setting on earth, it could prove to be the experience of a lifetime. It certainly was for me, as I hope these words and pictures demonstrate.
