Editorial Reviews

From the Author

As a Binge/Compulsive Eater your eating behaviors "work" for you in a variety of ways. Eating serves as an antidote to the feelings of self-hate, guilt, stress, anxiety, boredom, depression, anger, and so on. Thus, it is important that you understand the function of food behavior in your life, and the need to develop new skills and abilities in order to be able to give up bingeing as a coping mechanism.

You are not crazy or stupid, but you have an eating problem. You have an eating problem because, on some level, it works for you - by reducing tension and anxiety, extinguishing feelings you can't stand (including the offshoots of shame, self-hatred, depression, boredom, anger, and anxiety), getting you much-needed attention, removing you from an uncomfortable situation, and by bingeing you can temporarily avoid feeling chaotic or out-of-control.

Therefore, let's not treat this syndrome as though it was some disgusting thing to be gotten rid of. You will need to develop new skills and abilities that will enable you to solve the problems you're now using your Binge/Compulsive Eating to address. And this will take time. Don't try to give up your symptoms immediately. Remember that you are entitled to the time it takes you to recover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great help for my compulsive eating problems!!, February 26, 1999

This review is from: The Real Solution Binge/Compulsive Eating Workbook (Paperback)
I've been trying diets for years to lose weight. It wasn't until I read the Real Solution Workbook that I made the connection between my failures with these diets and my continued weight gain. The Real Solution Workbook helped me admit to myself that I was ashamed of myself and eating was a means of consolation for me. Once I was able to deal with my underlying emotional issues through simple daily writing exercises, I didn't need to binge eat anymore. I have lost weight. But more importantly, I feel better about myself and much more empowered!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars If you need help with binge eating DO NOT GET THIS BOOK, February 17, 2005
I paid the outrageous price for this book with hope that it would help me work through the causes of my bingeing. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!! Every chapter just repeats the same thing over and over using the last word an overweight person wants to hear - SHAME. The word shame is in this book thousands of times. I have enough shame facing the world in my overweight body. I did not need to pay $ 45 for a book to tell me that!

The worst, most insulting part of the whole purchase was that the book itself looks like someone made it in their basement. The pages are photocopied and in my copy of the book the pages are not even IN ORDER, page 47 is followed by 64, etc.

What a mess! Save your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Solution Binge/Compulsive Eating Workbook, May 5, 2002
By A Customer
I have been struggling for many years with my weight and "shame". I have learned I used food to avoid pain, difficult situations, and any thing else I don't want to do. My life had become one big eatfest to avoid living. This workbook was one of my best investments yet. Thanks again for the best help I have found.
