Short and simple mysteries,

This book presents 47 mysteries, including solutions, in just over 52 pages. One thing that keeps these so short is the lack of extraneous detail about the detective, locations, or suspects. You'll find no "Detective Elliot Savant with his famous dancing mule Mollie" or "quaint New England village of Baskerville" here. In fact, the detective in all these stories is simply "you" - and apparently you are a police detective. Of course, the shortness of these stories makes it hard to hide the key clues in the story, so they tend to be fairly simple.
Many of the clues (although not the specific stories in which they appear) seem to be retreads of older mysteries of this type, going back to Austin Ripley's out-of-print "Minute Mysteries" of the 1930's. In one case, the solution was anachronistic by the 1970's, when this book was originally published, and this was fixed with a somewhat lame parenthetic comment in the solution that a particular item was old-fashioned. I think this would have been fair if the story itself had at least hinted at old-fashioned furnishings, but it didn't. A couple of the other solutions are also a bit of a stretch, but I think the complaint most people will have is that too many of them are very obvious, generally involving an inconsistency in a suspect's story. On the other hand, these are real whodunit puzzles, mostly murders, not ordinary brain teasers masquerading as mysteries. In general, "Solv-a-Crime Puzzles" makes a good introduction to this genre, given the bargain price.

I really enjoy mystery stories. This is a very good set of mystery stories for a very cheap price. Some of the puzzles are very easy to solve, while others depend on very obscure knowledge of facts. The stories are short, so the book ends up being fairly thin.
It makes a good filler to hit the $25 mark for free shipping. I probably wouldn't have ordered it on its own though. Overall though, there should be a few puzzles that someone would enjoy.
