5.0 out of 5 stars Cut through the BS and get some help, January 28, 2007
This review is from: Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems (Paperback)
This book is so helpful in cutting through the BS around supplements and giving you the information you need to find just the right thing. I get so sick of the fake vitamins, the ridiculous claims, the marketing hype. "Solve it..." gives me the information I wanted to easily find the right supplement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fair, Balanced, and Fun!, January 2, 2007
This review is from: Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems (Paperback)
Herbs and other dietary supplements are widely used throughout the United States as complementary or alternative therapies. Almost half of patients use alternative therapies for chronic medical conditions in conjunction with over-the-counter and prescription medication. However, only 50% patients discuss the use of alternative therapies with their physicians. Thus, this work serves (in my opinion) a purpose beyond the obvious; that is, to narrow the knowledge gap that exists between physicians and patients by providing accurate, scientifically verifiable content that's both reader-friendly and useful.

Dr. Schulman inspires patients (throughout his book) to learn about the interaction between mind and body while utilizing a scientific approach to educate the public on the use of alternative/complementary therapies in the healing process. "Solve It With Supplements" provides a thorough review of not only the use of phytonutrient products in practice but also the basic science behind them (without being overly technical). He even throws in a little trivia to spice it up!

I am absolutely convinced that herbs and supplements have improved my life. I try to do as much research as possible on my own to ensure that I am making healthy choices before taking a product. My own doctor usually tells me that he is not comfortable recommending products. I figured out long ago that I need to be my own best advocate. Dr. Schulman is the real deal. He combines the open-mindedness of someone who thoroughly believes in the importance of herbs and supplements with the scutiny of a research scientist. I feel a lot of confidence in the information he presents. I am grateful for this new book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to home library, February 19, 2007
This review is from: Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems (Paperback)
The authors did a great job sorting out fact from fiction in the supplement market. Plenty of information is given to help the non professional start to make decisions reagarding their personal use of supplements. There are clear directions on dosage, drug interactions, and when to consult a professional. I particularly like the "Look out for this!" and "What to Avoid" paragraphs. The trivia, recipes, and humorous anectodotes make this book lively and readable. I highly recommend this book both to professional and non professional a like as a nice reference to have on hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this book and here is why., March 5, 2007
This review is from: Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems (Paperback)
Robert A. Schulman, M.D. is well qualified to write on this important subject. I know that his knowledge is based on formal training, extensive research and continuous clinical experience.

The clear format makes it easy to read and quickly find the information I am looking for. For example, the defined supplements listed by title in part two are further divided into subheadings "What It does", "How It Works ", "How To Take It", "Look Out For This" and "What To Avoid". The medical issues in part three are briefly defined and the recommendations are divided into two sections, "What Should I Take" and "My Supplement List".

As an obstetrician and gynecologist, I can see referring to this source of information as I would other sources such as "Up To Date", the "PDR" and "Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation " by Briggs, Freeman and Yaffee. As a point of criticism, or perhaps more so a point of recommendation, a quarterly or at minimum a semi annually update of his work is essential. Perhaps Dr. Schulman can post these changes on his web site. An example of this is the absence of the more current information on cervical dysplasia, such as HPV typing and the most current information on the HPV vaccine.

This work has become a sorely needed reference for me. I keep it handy and use
It frequently. I have purchased several copies to give as gifts to family members, close friends and colleagues.

This is a wonderful reference book for anyone interested in knowing what herbs and supplements to have in the house, and how to use them on both a daily basis and for specific ailments. The book is thorough, but not too techinical or complicated.

The information presented appears up to date, and I hope that the authors will continue to update the material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real compilation of information, June 10, 2007
This review is from: Solve It with Supplements: The Best Herbal and Nutritional Supplements to Help Prevent and Heal More than 100 Common Health Problems (Paperback)
This is the first really good book on the subject that I have seen which supplies both a disease based guide and a supplement by supplement guide as well. The author has made it easy to use for patients as well as heath care providers. We keep a cpoy in our physician office waiting room for patient reference. A true must for anyone interested in alternative health care options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vitamins and common sense, June 14, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Slowly, over the course of many years, the collection of vitamins on my shelf which I consumed, grew larger and larger.
One day, when, unusually, I did not wake up in a good mood, I critically surveyed my shelf of vitamins with a singularly jaundiced eye, like a crow, side to side. Hmmm, the better part of 200 bucks here. Also, regularly refreshed ie, money spent constantly like a little river flowing.
I am not rich, I have my AARP membership card and the curious phrase I found on the internet "expensive urine" caught my attention.
A got a good book here, IMHO, delivered for less than 9 dollars, written by real doctors rather than some pompous, charlatan PHD's or worse.
After 2 months of casual perusal of this book, I don't feel the worse for wear taking its advice as so written.
In fact, I feel better, even if only now, as when I urinate, I appreciate not frittering away my modest little life savings.
The price of the book has clearly already paid for itself in both health and mental advantage and savings to boot, in my humble estimation.
My two cents.
Enjoy, use or ignore my advice as you see fit.
Well done, Amazon
