Book Description

Sophisticated mathematics is accessible to all. This book proves it! This is a collection of intriguing mathematical problems and activities linked by common themes that all involve working with objects from our everyday experience. Learn about the mathematics of a bagel, a checkerboard and a pile of laundry for example. Discover for yourself that wheels need not be round, that braids need not have free ends, that it's always best to turn around twice - and more! Mathematics is all around us, we all do mathematics every day. The activities contained in this book are immediate, catchy and fun, but upon investigation, begin to unfold into surprising layers of depth and new perspectives. The necessary mathematics, in increasing levels of difficulty, is explained fully along the way. Mathematics educators will find this an invaluable resource of fresh and innovative approaches to topics in mathematics.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best collection of problems of maximum interest, September 4, 2001
This review is from: Solve This: Math Activities for Students and Clubs (Classroom Resource Materials) (Paperback)
Great problems implies excited students which implies great mathematicians. In this book, you will find some of the most interesting, entertaining problems available for presentation to undergraduates. Calling them hands-on is to understate as some involve disrobing strategies to explain the physical rotation of body parts and others the proper cutting of paper into mathematical structures.

I found some of the problems so interesting that I stopped reading to verify the results. This book receives my highest recommendation and there is no doubt that if you use it, the students will respond often with the phrase, cool problem. It is the poster book for mathematics as a fun activity....

This review is from: Solve This: Math Activities for Students and Clubs (Classroom Resource Materials) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book for students and teachers alike. Sophisticated mathematics is made accessible to everyone. Written with humor, thoughtfulness and a real sense of where people have difficulties and how to get around them, Tanton puts his finger on the pleasures and promises of each problem. Not to be missed, no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are.
