Book Description

August 30, 2007 0275993477 978-0275993474 1st

Emory University Pediatrician Roy Benaroch wrote this guide to help parents understand the most common childhood maladies and misbehaviors and know what the best options are for action. Himself the father of three, Benaroch shares the insights of a medically-trained parent, telling us what he would do if his own child developed each malady. The topics addressed range from abdominal pain, ear infections and vomiting to issues with eating, sleeping and toilet training. Benaroch includes the most recent research in each area and shares vignettes from his own practice and his own household.

All parents have faced the frustration of seeing their child sick and not knowing whether to rush to the doctor, offer over-the-counter remedies, or do little and wait to see if the problem passes. So too we have all faced those times when our children seem well but will not cooperate with behaviors involving eating, sleeping, or other activities. Emory University Pediatrician Roy Benaroch wrote this guide to help parents understand the most common childhood maladies and misbehaviors, and know what the best options are for action. Himself the father of three, Benaroch shares the insights of a medically-trained parent, telling us what he would do if his own child developed each malady. The topics addressed range from abdominal pain, ear infections and vomiting to issues with eating, sleeping and toilet training.

Benaroch includes the most recent research in each area, and shares vignettes from his own practice, and his own household. Known widely simply as Dr. Roy, he is also the author of How to Get the Best Healthcare for Your Child (Praeger, 2007).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an important and credible work. Written for intelligent parents of infants and young children in carefully and clearly written text, it reviews many of the common medical and behavioral problems seen in this age group. The author very clearly reports on when to call the physician--an important aid for worried parents. The book is very user friendly, easy to read, and written with humor."-Mark A. Goldstein, M.D. Chief, Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Medical School

More About the Author

Roy Benaroch is a pediatrician and writer of good, interesting stuff.

My best writing lessons have taken place on the other end of an otoscope, talking with adults and their children and teenagers. For adults, my books try to explain health issues as clearly as possible, without jargon and fancy-talk. I tell parents what they need to know, spilling the kinds of secrets you won't usually hear from a doctor.

I love talking with kids, too-- my style is to keep them smiling and engaged, so they don't mind it when I look in their ears. My young adult novel, Flow, is a fun, fast moving story to captivate young and old alike.

I live near Atlanta with my wife, three kids, two parakeets, one loveable dog, and one psychotic fish. My general pediatric practice is in Roswell, and I teach at Emory University as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. I also like to grow veggies and swim.

For more health-related pediatric information, visit www.pediatricinsider.com. I keep news about my young adult fiction projects at www.benawrite.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! January 19, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This book is full of great information for all those medical/behavior issues you are unsure about when you have a little one. We pull it out all the time when one of our children has a rash, earache or even as we tackled potty training! The book is humorous and easy to read! We have found our newest "baby gift" because it will be used for years to come, unlike a rattle or toy!
