I would recommend the book "Solving Employee Performance Problems" by Bruce, Hampel, and Lamont to any HR person or manager who wants to improve the way performance feedback and appraisals are done in their company. The authors share their experience from various corporate HR and consulting roles. They do this by providing lots of tips and worksheet examples in almost every chapter. A few references the reader gets from this book which they can refer back to often include: the 3-step onboarding process, a simple 4-step model for performance management, 8-steps to preventing performance problems, team assessment worksheet, motivating others worksheet, 8 tools for problem-solving, 7-steps to performance improvement, 7 ideas for performance building, and a performance improvement worksheet for measuring Individual employee improvement. Plus there are a few case studies and a variety of easy-to-follow examples that include: 19 common behavior problem examples, 30 conversation starters for addressing performance, and 14 examples for coaching and development plans. The book is well worth the price. As a supervisor, I would buy it for chapters 4 and 6 alone. These authors give you a full 10 chapters comprising almost 250 pages of very helpful information!

I just received my copy of Solving Employee Performance Problems and before the end of business today, I used one of its
sample conversations and the four-step performance management tool. There are so many HR books out there, but this one delivers
on its promise. I also got tipped off to the free HR website HumanResourcesSources.org and really enjoyed the information provided by
Connect the Dots Consulting, PeopleNRG, Marlene Chism, and Sam Glenn!
I've gotten more out of this book in one day than I have out of all my HR books in one year!
Great job Anne, Brenda and Erika!
Looking forward to checking out your websites and seeing what's coming next.

Small business owners juggle many responsibilities and do not have an HR manager or Organizational Development person on board. For the small business owner this book is a GREAT resource to immediately identify the problem and get instant advice for getting everyone back in alignment. The book is full of visuals and graphics that make it easy to use. A must for every leadership library, including every HR professional in big corporations, and for small business owners who have employees. Solving Employee Performance problems by Anne Bruce, Brenda Hampel and Erika Lamont is a great book to have on hand, period!

This book will NOT sit on my shelf and collect dust! It offers proactive suggestions and approaches to avoid performance issues as well as tips for spotting problems early and strategies to deal with problems that have become issues. The templates and conversation starter sections are especially useful. I love the "Bite-Sized Chunks of Wisdom" sections that share real-life advice from some very successful companies we all know and trust. The three authors, Anne, Brenda and Erika bring a real knowledge of this topic to their writing - not just research, but actual experience, which will help us all become better managers.

Imagine two of your employees in your office who work alongside each other. TONI comes in early to get ready for the day; TIM slips in just in time to avoid a reprimand. TONI spend some of her free time thinking about how to make improvements at work; TIM spends some work time playing games online and chatting with his friends. TONI loves her job and it shows since she attempts to do her best each day; TIM comes in for the paycheck and it shows since he has little regard for doing the job well.

If you manage these two employees, you don't have a problem...you have two problems. Obviously, TIM needs some serious coaching. But perhaps not so obvious is what will happen to TONI if she continues working hard and demonstrating passion for the job while TIM slides by seemingly without any sort of negative consequence!

I worked as an HR coach in a large organization, and I love this book for three reasons. First, it's PRACTICAL. If you manage people, you can crack it open, find stories, examples, and samples that fit the situation you're in, and find an immediate solution. Second, it's PREVENTIVE. You don't have to have a TIM you wish to "fix" to find value in the book. If you are a leader--or if you wish to become a better equipped leader--you will find pragmatic, useful concepts that will keep you from making mistakes. Finally, it's PROACTIVE. The real benefit in solving employee performance problems is that "slacker-free" workplaces foster high performance and engagement levels. From my experience as an engagement consultant, I know that you can't increase engagement levels when basic performance problems go unaddressed. Dealing with performance problems proactively sets the stage for increased engagement levels.

Kudos to Anne, Brenda, and Erika for making this book so relevant and meaningful in today's office of ever-increasing expectations.
