Book Description

May 1992
This 280 page work-life book is a practical and informative guide for individuals struggling with balancing work and family. The guide is packed full of activities, case studies, and worksheets. The book assists individuals to create a whole life plan and look for options. There is information for individuals at every stage of their lifecylce. For example, there is guidance for couples planning children while having a career, ideas for communicating and organizing while working and raising children. There are detailed lists for choosing child and elder care. There are several sections for special family situations such as single parenting, blended families, and traveling. The last section addresses ways to get the organization to cooperate. The book has an extensive list of resources and bibliographical references. Most importantly, it is a book that focuses on the positive aspects of managing families and careers. Bonnie Michaels, the primary author, has experienced all aspects of the book's topics and brings extensive personal experience and stories.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The authors, are careful to avoid making the balancing act between family and career--or just plain jobs--into purely a women's concern. and, because we still live in a world in which the majority of working women have two jobs, this book gives all readers an insight into what they are up against. it is possible that this type of book can help to change long-standing attitudes about gender roles. The lists of concerns addressed in each chapter are nothing short of exhaustive, yet the book does help readers solve the problems that might seem overwhelming. I believe it is extraordinarliy helpful that in the early part of the book readers are asked to examine their assumptions and goals as well as their current circumstances.

The book does not necessarily need to be read and absorbed all at once, rather, I believe it is meant to be worked with at one's own pace. If a reader is fortunate enough to read the book before the puzzle has been created, then the book represents a series of reminders of what is ahead.

The book is well documented, offering additional reading for those who want to explore psychological issues, goal setting, time management, child care, communication, and so on. This is a book I can wholeheartedly recommend, not only because its time has come, but it genuinely offers help to what has become more than just a personal dilemma in our culture. Employer and employees can benefit from the straightforward examination of what has become "normal" in the United States today. -- Virginia McCullough, Talking to the Boss, September '92
