I bought this when my puppy was 15 pounds. She's now over 20 pounds, and the small size still fits. I will definitely upgrade to the medium size when necessary. I tried 3 other car restraints on my dog before finding this one. I think both the dog and I love this product. It's easy to put on, easy to install, and easy to wear for her. I strap it to the shoulder belt in the back/middle seat so she has a great view of the entire car. She can move around freely, but cannot jump up to the front seat. Very good value!

I bought 2 of these - one for my small 15 lbs. dog, and one for my other small dog, a regular sized Chihuahua male that weighs around 7 pounds. The harness worked great for the larger of the two dogs because he had a bigger girth than the Chihuahua, and because his neck was larger. Although the manufacture claims it's appropriate for a 6 lbs. dog, I strongly don't think it's appropriate for dogs smaller than 10 lbs. or that have a neck size of less than 10 inches after my Chihuahua slipped out and slammed into the back of the driver seat in my car while I was driving. I wished Solvit made an XS size because their size small is too big for small dogs weighing 6 pounds or more.

On a side note, Amazon's return policy is awesome.

After trying this product out on a four day trip I am going to garage sale it. It was too warm for my Pomeranian and it allowed her to jump to the floor of the car where she hung suspended. It would probably be fine for a different breed but I have gone back to the crate.

This is the best car harness I have seen! I work at a veterinary clinic and we strongly recommend making sure your pet is secured while riding in the car, it's safer for both you and your pet. Unlike some harnesses marketed for vehicles, this harness has strong construction elements and uses metal buckles on pressure points, unlike plastic which will break easily.The padding is nice and fluffy and really does it's job. I got the small for my french bulldog puppy when he was about 14 weeks old, he learned very quickly to behave and "stay in his seat" while driving. He's happy because he can see me from the back seat and I'm happy because he's not trying to climb in my lap. He's a large chested and now at 8 months and 21 lbs I'm considering moving up to the medium size, although the small does still fit it's getting tight. It's easy to get on/off of him and moving the connector between cars isn't a problem at all. I don't want to sound like a public service announcement, but in the event of an accident an unrestrained dog can become a dangerous projectile either flying towards the back of your head or towards the windshield, and a dog in the front seat or in the drivers lap could easily be killed by an airbag. I have been very pleased with the solvit harness and think it was one of the best purchases I have made for myself and my dog.

I bought this for my 20 pound miniature poodle mix dog (full grown) as soon as I got him, and it's been one of the best pet investments I've made.

The most regular purpose it serves is keeping him out of the way while I'm driving. Whether he's in the passenger seat or the back, this keeps him off my lap. It gives him enough room to move around so he can put his paws up and look out the window. He enjoys car rides, so this was a much better alternative to a crate, especially when we had a 1,600 mile move to make.

Note: You need to pull out the seat belt so that it keeps taught against the seat to keep your dog from pulling away. My dog was actually able to move himself all the way from the back seat to the front seat while in the harness when I didn't have the seatbelt locked.

Additionally, I can personally attest that this did the job during an actual car accident. He was in the harness in the back seat when my car lost traction on a dirt road and ended up going over some small boulders. The car was totaled, but everyone--including my dog strapped down safely with this product--was fine.

This product isn't just about safety for your pets; it's about your own safety as well, whether that's keeping them from distracting you while driving or during an accident when they could be thrown around in the vehicle.

Additionally, a friend of mine pointed out that it's useful for accidents so that your pet won't run away if they're not secured somehow, which is also true for over-eager dogs when going to get them out of the car.

I have a 15 pound poodle mix and this harness fits her well. It's adjustable so I would say it could fit a dog a few pounds liter than that too. I like it because she seems comfortable in it, she can stand up to look out the window while buckled in and she can also lay down comfortably. I use it for long trips and even leave the clip part on my passenger seatbelt. I'm thinking about moving it to the backseat though because if I was in an accident, she could be hurt by the airbags. It's a little pricey but a good quality product and worth it if it saves my dogs life.

These are great dog seatbelts - they allow just the right amount of freedom for a small dog. It lets them stand up to look out the windows, and lay down on the seat to rest on a long trip, but it still keeps them off of the floor and out of the front seats. Also, I suppose, it ought to keep them very safe in any crash (although we haven't yet tested this feature). They clip in and out very easily, and the harnesses fit our tiny Cavalier King Charles Spaniels just right. Definitely recommended.

Finally, I can take my 15 pound terrier mix on trips knowing she is secured safely. Solvit did solve my problems. Until now, Annie wandered from front to back - window to window... I worried that if I were in a collision, and the airbag deployed, she might be seriously injured - or even killed. The Solvit harness works like a charm. It is sturdy and it gives padded protection to Annie's chest and tummy. The only fault I can see is that a dog smaller than 15 pounds might be too small for this harness. (I have it about as small as it can be adjusted).

Very safe, very secure harness. Heavy duty for my little crazy dogs. Also double as a harness for walks in the park which is a huge bonus. I like the snaps, the heavy padding around the chest and the short strap that attached to the actual seat belt. I agree with the other reviews - this is pretty heavy duty, so probably not great for anything under 12 lbs. My 16 pound Boston Mix is able to wear it just fine, but it is a little heavy so it would probably make a 6 lb. chihuahua topple over. I'd say don't get it if your dog is under 10 lbs, just a lighter weight harness. Overall, I think it is great, and so cheap compared to other top brands. 5 Stars!!

Overall this is a solid product, with straps that are secure, with padding and a solid set of "clicks" to it. The harness slips over the dog's head, and there is a second piece that attaches to the seat belt.

For a small dog (mine is 8 lbs) it still fits well, but I think that it depends on the dog's temperament. My dog doesn't mind sitting down and she's content to pass the time away in the car without moving around much. It provides the restraint for safety without acting as a constraint.

With that said, if your dog is restless, like my friend's yorkie, there is a lot of leeway in the seatbelt attachment so if the dog tends to jump around, it could lead to the dog falling off the seat or getting wrapped up. It probably won't hurt the dog but it can cause a distraction, which is exactly what you don't want while driving.

My primary quibble about the device is that the seatbelt attachment isn't adjustable, so there's not really a way to bring it in closer to the seat. With that said, I still think it's probably one of the better restraint systems available in this size, and I feel more comfortable using this device than using my dog's travel kennel.

Recommended, but it how it works for you sort of depends on what kind of personality your dog has.
