We recently took a two day trip with our beloved hound-thing and two dachshunds. Our hound is thirteen and is no longer steady on his feet so I wanted a device to keep him in the backseat without restricting his movement much, while also restraining him quickly and safely if we had to stop suddenly. This was the perfect answer. He didn't mind the harness, it is padded so it didn't hurt him or cut into his chest and shoulders(he gets choked with a collar), he could change positions and sides of the seat during the eight hour drives, and all we had to do was unclip the harness from the strap attached to the seatbelt when we walked him. The fit was true to size for him. We also purchased two harnesses for the dachshunds. Because of their deep chests and long backs the small was too small and the medium was a bit problematic as well. We needed a slightly longer, narrower medium or a much longer, slightly wider small for our tiny but overweight, long-haired dachshund, and she was a bit warm wearing it (the weather didn't help, either), and the same was true for our dachshund that is not pancake shaped. Obviously, many items are not sized and shaped for dachshunds! We will certainly continue to use these harnesses. One thing you might want to keep in mind is the airbag in the front seat. We were concerned that if we held our dachshunds in the front seat that the airbag might cause them injury.

The dog stays put,
This review is from: Solvit 62296 Pet Vehicle Safety Harness, Large (Misc.)
The reason I bought this item was because my dog was running all over the backseat and kept trying to get into the front seat when I drove. I can't believe it, but now he gets in the car, and waits for me to put his vest on. I think he loves it. I never have any trouble with him, and the bonus is if there is an accident, he will be protected.

I ordered this particular product because the one we had felt a little flimsy. What appealed to me about the new harness were the metal, not plastic, clips. It is a very sturdy product and the only reason I've given it 4 and not 5 stars is that somehow my dog can barely move around once it is on. Now I understand that is probably the point, but all I want is a little extra mobility so that she can lie down - and not be locked into a sitting position for a long trip. It may well be that I haven't yet figured out how to use it properly... So a good product, very secure overall. Would recommend.

My six month old golden retriever has just outgrown the second size of this terrific product. I'm about to buy her a large size. She has worn this in my car from the age of 8 weeks. The padded chest portion keeps her very comfortable (but I am aware that she is warmer when wearing it). I also use a bench seat cover in the back of my car to keep it clean. Once she's in the harness and once it is clipped to the strap attached to the seat belt, then I know she is safe and secure. However, I do have to agree with the other reviewer that I, too, wish the the strap that attaches to the seat belt was about 6 inches longer. You have the choice of clipping the strap around either the shoulder belt portion (the seat belt is fastened before the strap is attached) or the lap belt portion. She has a bit too much freedom when it is attached to the shoulder belt portion, but when she's secured to the lap belt portion, she's too restricted. I'd fasten her to the middle seat belt's shoulder portion but with the seat cover, I can't access the shoulder belt from behind the seat cover. I think I will try fastening the strap from the new large size that is on order to the strap from the medium size that is in the car to give her some additional freedom when fastened to the lap belt. She likes to stick her head out of the window, which is fine with me, but I don't want her to be able to jump out of the open window and land on the ground, all the while still fastened to the right passenger shoulder belt, which happened a few days ago when I was parked in a friend's driveway (thank goodness) but boy, did that surprise me! She doesn't mind wearing the harness, and I don't have to worry about her getting in the front seat, or becoming a missile if I have to stop suddenly. All dogs must be safely secured when in cars. And this product is excellent, very well made, and very comfortable to wear, and easy to use. Highly recommended!

because she can't give me any more sloppy kisses while driving. It keeps her fairly well in place, though contrary to many reviewers, I had to adjust the harness to its shortest setting to prevent her from coming up front. It still allows her to get up, look out the window, put her head up against the passengers head, rest her head on the console, etc. On an 8 hr drive my dog seemed very comfortable and ended up sleeping all but maybe an hour of it.
Some tips from my experience: If your dog can still come up into the front seat, first, adjust the harness - seatbelt strap to its shortest length and put it on the lap portion of the belt. Even though the dog in the picture looks like it has the safety harness on the chest part of the safety belt, my dog could easily pull and get up into the front no matter what the setting, so I put the harness on the lap part of the belt and that worked pretty well until she (intentionally?) stepped on the seat belt release mechanism and again, got up in the front. This was remedied by attaching the passengers side seat belt to the driver side seat belt latch. Let the harness air out a few days before using it: the harness has a certain smell fresh out of the package that made my dog try to eat it when I first put it on.

I purchased this safety harness hoping it would restrain my yellow lab mix. It worked nicely on our 400 mile trip until we reached our destination. She then somehow bit through one of the straps. I had it sewed back together and we did OK on the return trip. I think the problem might be the size. My dog is too big for a medium, but the large seems too big on her.

This is a wonderful safety item for a dog and comfortable to boot. Other harnesses are made of hard plastic webbing but this one is padded fleece so the dog stays comfortable in it. The strap slides up and down the seat belt, allowing the dog to move around and change positions. Wish we had known about this harness before, as it's a necessary item for pet safety.

Quality Harness But a Tricky Fit,

I ordered a large version of this harness, after researching many travel harnesses available. My large whippet fit within the parameters for a large harness, since his neck/chest measurement was 18 and his girth was 26. I think it is a tricky fit for some breeds - especially those with a broad rib-cage and narrower chest - as one would find with many sighthounds. It arrived today and it is very well made and appears as though it would be comfortable if you have a dog with the appropriate body habitus for this type of harness. On Jack it was clownishly large and I was so disappointed. Returning items just is my nemesis!! But, I am returning it and I am going to try a medium, simply because I like the padding this harness provides for a muscular dog with negligible body fat. I might also buy a Watson's travel harness, which is comparable in strength rating and use of stainless hardware on pressure points. I'll compare the two and if they both fit, I will keep them, as I will then have a harness hooked up in both vehicles. Jack is a well-traveled dog!

We purchased the Slovit pet vehicle safety harness for our two 50-pound dogs. Our goal was not only to add safety to their rides but also to restrain them sufficiently without cramping their style too much. The only problem we had with this item was that the tether was too short when used the way we needed to use it. That is the only reason I gave the product 4 stars rather than 5. If attached to the shoulder harness of our vehicle, one of our dogs, a very active Australian Shepherd, had too much room and could easily leap into the back of our SUV. If we attached it to the lap belt, however, which provides less give, the tether was too confining, especially for our taller animal, and our dogs couldn't really enjoy such things as comfortably gazing out the windows on road trips. We solved that, ahem, shortcoming by buying additional tethers identical to the ones that came with the harness and then attaching them together for use with the lap belt. Bingo! Problem solved. It would be nice if the manufacturer provided a choice of tether lengths. Different dogs need different amounts of space.
This harness is very well padded, so you don't have to worry about cutting into your dog's body when the harness is tugged either by a sudden stop or by the dogs themselves. It is also easy to put on and take off and has nice large fasteners that click solidly into place. With the added tether, our dogs can still leap out of the car when we open the door if they are so inclined (though we discourage such impulsive behavior), but they wind up immediately beside the vehicle, held securely in place until we free them or place them back in the vehicle. It doesn't take long for the dogs to learn that jumping out impulsively is pointless. Even if the tether was shorter and our dogs' feet didn't quite reach the ground when they leaped out, the padding of the harness would prevent injury since the harness is held via a ring on the back rather than the neck. Though we are long-time dog lovers and owners, we had never before used vehicle safety harnesses for any of our dogs, which was a stupid oversight on our part. One of our adult children introduced us to them recently and we were immediately impressed. Now, when we take our dogs for a drive, they don't slide around nor do we have to worry about them leaping out of the car and darting into traffic when we open a door. We also don't have to deal with their jumping into the front seat and distracting the driver. Of course, were we to have a wreck, the harness would clearly provide at least some protection for our dogs, mainly by preventing them from bouncing all over the vehicle's interior or even being thrown out of it. We did a lot of research before we settled on the Solvit. I think we made a good decision. This harness is well made, the fasteners seem sturdy and the padding is generous. It is also a very humane device that inflicts neither pain nor discomfort if you install and use it correctly. The merchant provided excellent service as well. I enthusiastically recommend this product.

I have a big dog and that means it is impossible to take him anywhere since hes so overpowering. so you can imagine how it would be to take him to the groomers let alone the vet in the car. Since i purcased this doggie seat belt i used and it held him in place, my 85 lb german shepard was allowed certain range of motion but other than that it did its job! i wasnt worried about him jumping up to the front seat from the back, which is a big stuggle we tend to have when we go "bye bye". Good product!
