Serious jazz from bossa-era Brazil,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: O Som (Audio CD)
A strong, serious straight-up jazz set from saxophonist JT Meirelles... This CD reissues the 1964 album, "O Som," along with three bonus tracks taken from the 1965 follow-up album, "O Novo Som." At a time when Brazilian jazz was dominated by the hyperactive "bossa trios" of Luiz Eca, et al, albums like this were few and far between. Meirelles was obviously steeped in the cool and atonal jazz of Miles Davis, and was carrying the torch down below the Equator. Definitely worth checking out if you're into classic Brazilian jazz. This is THE album that started the Samba-Jazz / Brazilian Jazz movement back in 1965; a very fine and superbly crafted album with a fantastic line up of fine musicians like Dom Um Romao, Carlos Vinhas, etc. and on the last 3 (bonus) tracks: Eumir Deodato, Roberto Menescal, Edison Machado, Waltel Branco, etc.If you're into Brazilian Jazz, or just Jazz in general, this is an absolute MUST have; I know you'll enjoy it. |
