5.0 out of 5 stars I discovered this cd set on the Soma website
I discovered this cd set on the Soma website about a dozen years ago. I remember many of these groups playing at the Anoka (MN) Armory on Friday and Saturday nights. Liar, Liar - Little Latin Lupe Lu - Let The Good Times Roll - Run-Run-Run. This is good stuff if you like this kind of stuff - and I do. Sound quality isn't 100% in all cases and some of the tunes are a...

3.0 out of 5 stars hmmmmm...
Sixties pop music from local Minnesota dance bands. Will appeal to lovers of garage bands and those who "grooved" to this music on WDGY when it came out. There are a handful of fine performances (the Underbeats especially) and a couple of national hits (Surfin' Bird, Liar-Liar) but alot of it is amateurish and just plain dull. However, Little Latin Lupe...

There are a handful of fine performances (the Underbeats especially) and a couple of national hits (Surfin' Bird, Liar-Liar) but alot of it is amateurish and just plain dull. However, Little Latin Lupe Lu is KILLER, the best garage-band tune I've ever heard, and blows the doors off of Louie-Louie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great garage band examples, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Soma Records Story (Audio CD)
Though some midwest garages can be "cold", especially in the winter, this complilation serves up some "warming" fare. The classic "Surfin Bird", by the Trashmen is here and a bouncy "Run Run Run" by the Gestures. The "sleeper" here is "Ride On" by the Torres...classic SOMA echo coupled with jangling "Byrdsesque" 12-String, solid bass line and driving drums...interesting stuff!

Wonderful trip back to when cruising and weekend dances were what you lived for. Depicts the great diversity of the "rock" music from the Upper Midwest

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! Great !, November 5, 1998

For a guy who grew up in St Paul Minnesota and saw these "Garage Bands" almost every weekend, this is a pleasant trip down memory lane. If you like the music of 1963-1967 this is a besy buy! 48 songs of the past. Just great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest of the garage bands, November 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Soma Records Story (Audio CD)
This CD has some of the greatest garage band tunes that you don't get to hear on the radio. Shipment was one day early which was really cool. The condition of the disc and case was exactly as it was posted. If it wasn't for the few marks on the slip cover, you would have thought the discs were never used. Can't wait to get out in my garage and crank up these tunes. As said once before, this set is missing one of the great Underbeats songs "sweat words of love" and that it should also be released again.

Great music from the 60's Minneapolis local scene bands. Some great talent and some fun times from the past make this worth purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars MINNESOTA ROCKS, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Soma Records Story (Audio CD)
I DONT HAVE THIS COMPILATION YET, BUT I HAVE MANY OF THESE 45S. AFTER LISTENING TO THIS I REALIZED HOW GREAT THIS STUFF SOUNDS! THE GESTURES, CASTAWAYS,TRASHMEN, ETC. INSPIRED ME TO BUY MY FIRST ELECTRIC BASS, A 75 DOLLAR USED HOFNER, AND JOIN MY FIRST GARAGE BAND IN 1965. AFTER 40 YEARS IN BANDS I STILL FIND THE RAW ENTHUSIASM OF THIS MUSIC CHARMING! THIS COLLECTION NEEDS TO BE REISSUED....WHERE ARE YOU SUNDAZED? I KNOW HUNDREDS OF BOOMERS LIKE ME THAT WOULD BUY IT! HOW ABOUY YOU REV-OLA!
