Some Change (Thank God),
This review is from: Some Change (Audio CD)
It is amazing to follow the career paths of musicians who rose together, achieved success, then burn all of their creative juices, fading away into obscurity, usually never to return. The best sometimes do come back from oblivion and for that we can be thankful. Boz Scaggs and Steve Miller rose together, played together, achieved successes together and apart, made the same Faustian bargains with the disco era then slipped away into the mists of memory. Fortunately, Boz has returned to make two albums which are greater than anything he did before them. The first of these is "Some Change", a tour de force that leaves you wondering why it took so long to come back (the other is the soulful, bluesy "Come On Home). Everything is here: Rock, soul, blues, and jazz. The hard-edged title cut, You Got My Letter and Follow That Man bracket soulful love ballads like I'll Be the One, Call Me, and the haunting Sierra. Fly Like A Bird is a quirky sing-a-long style piece which adds a new dimension to the Scaggs repetoire. Scaggs' suave delivery and inherent sensitivity make it easy to see why Scaggs is always said to be appealing to sophisticated women. This well-rounded album should appeal to both women and men of refined musical taste and sensibility. There is not a bad or mediocre cut on the album.

his best,
By byron prather (America) - See all my reviews

As a fan of Boz Scaggs for more than twenty years, I can assure you that this is his very best. You cannot escape the very human appeal that his music conveys. From the first track you are swept up in a lyrical whirlpool of emotion and experience. Almost everyone can find something to relate to. After I had listened to it for more than I would like to admit, the back stories stayed with me long after the music stopped. I was very impressed by this long awaited album and quickly recommended it to one of my friends who also is a fan. The one track that he must have played fifty times was "Fly like a bird". Boz's style has matured and his voice is the most consistant of any performer that has ever sang a ballad or a pop cut. His style is comparable to Nat"king"Cole in the way he brings you into the format or story. It is unfortunate that his music isn't more appreciated. I have already introduced two more generations to his music and hope that some artist will pick up where he leaves off.

Boz just gets better and better. I (re)discovered his music with this CD and the song "High Sierra." I couldn't believe it was the same man who wrote "The Lido Shuffle." Then I saw him live twice, and now I am a fan forever. He is soul, he rocks, he croons, he is jazz and just plain good music.

Impeccable Boz,

Boz has been a mainstay of pop music culture since the early 70's, and as the century was drawing to a close, he still maintained his own brand of soulful jazz, pop, balladry. This is an exceptional tour de force for Boz. "Time" is one of the best songs Boz has ever recorded with its quiet, introspective opening and its rhythmic build-up. What a song! "Sierra," "Lost It," "Fly Like a Bird," and the title track are also outstanding performances. In all, the album is probably Mr. Scaggs' best, along side "Down Two Then Left". A definite must for true fans of good enduring music!

Few Words Needed,

I first started listening to Boz Scaggs 28 years ago (oh my, where did the years go). This is one of his best. Mixes the "old" Boz Scaggs with the more "commercial" stuff. Extremely touching, musically and emotionally. Check it out -- you won't regret it.

meloncholy and wise, his most beautiful album,

This album is Boz Scaggs best, the music is incredibly beautiful and melodic. One of the songs "Sierra" shows Boz' amazing vocal range and the lyrics are poetry. This album is pretty complex and requires a bit of solitude to fully enjoy.

Really is Some Change,
By James Bader (North Georgia) - See all my reviews

Within two sittings "Some Change" became my most cherished music from "the Boz". Virtually every selection is good, but I'll Be the One", "Sierra","Call Me",Fly Like a Bird", and "Lost It" are mesmerizing and will be on your mind long after the player is turned off. It continues to be one of my favorite cd's of all time. The range and melody of the voice and implementation of instruments is outstanding and will just carry you away. definitely a five star in my book.

An artist with incredible range.,

Boz Scaggs has given us nearly thirty years of some of the best music ever written. This CD demonstrates the range the man possesses. From the bluesy title song to the haunting ballad, Sierra, you will enjoy every selection. If you really want to trace the man's evolution spend the money to get the Anthology; you won't be sorry you did.

Fine singing, song writing, and guitar playing,
By
This review is from: Some Change (Audio CD)
Among the latter day releases by Boz Scaggs, "Some Change" is one of his better efforts. Although this recording does not have the edginess of his earlier works it also does not delve into the schmaltz that pervades his "But Beautiful, Standards: Volume 1."
What "Some Change" has going for it is Mr. Scaggs' fine singing, song writing, and guitar playing. His voice floats in and above the music, never harsh. This batch of songs reflects life and its changes through the prism of a good wordsmith. Sometimes things may get a tad sappy, but that comes with the terrain. Finally, Mr. Scaggs handles the guitar quite ably throughout this set, sometimes cutting loose like the Boz of old, but always displaying finesse. All in all, things are a bit slicker and smoother than I typically like, but this CD goes well with a solo car trip or a rainy day.

Boz and his Blues,
By Ronald B. Hubbard (Dallas(Oak Cliff), Texas) - See all my reviews

Being from Dallas, I always kept an ear out for what New changes Boz may go through. What comes 'round goes 'round. I bought Anthology, and I got to pick out the songs of old. Then I discovered this wonderful album...no fillers. The title says it all, yet sometimes less is more. His passion in his quitar and voice are one. Full circle...
