I am a big fan of Blue Highway and this CD is excellent... I love to listen to it in the car or while I am quilting... They are still great after all these years together... It always sounds like they are enjoying what they are doing... Lots of good energy... Buy it, you won't be sorry...

4.0 out of 5 stars 15 Years of Contemporary Bluegrass Excellence, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Some Day: 15th Anniversary Collection (Aniv) (Audio CD)
There's plenty of greatest-hits nostalgia to be had on this compilation, culled from Rounder releases and marking Blue Highway's 15 years together. But Blue Highway has never been a band to rest on their laurels, so "Some Day" starts off with a new song from Shawn Lane. Lyrics and music entwine for a chilling evocation of the "Cold and Lowdown Lonesome Blues".

Rob Ickes proves why he appears regularly on the ballot for the IBMA's Dobro Player of the Year with "Monroebro," a Bill Monroe-style piece that proves a delightful contradiction (Monroe never wrote for or included dobro in his Blue Grass Boys). Ickes cries along with guest vocalist, Darrel Scott, on "Bleeding for a Little Peace of Mind."

With three equally-gifted vocalists, bluegrass gospel has always been one of this band's strong points. "Seven Sundays In a Row" tells a story of long-suffering, perseverance, and ultimate redemption in the lives of a married couple, one of whom has rejected Jesus.

"Wondrous Love" is a well-loved shape note tune about the boundless, incomparable love of Jesus, the one constant through a journey of faith. The vocals start out spare and unadorned, only to build to a roof-rattling chorus.

From the book of Revelation, "The Seventh Angel" is a Shawn Lane composition adorned by little more than Lane's haunting lead vocal, which tells the story of the end times through the eyes of one of the angels who heralds them. The title track is a lovely re-recording of Blue Highway's most requested song.

Outstanding musicianship, solid songwriting, vocal chops that are showcased on bluegrass gospel -- that's the music of Blue Highway in a nutshell. It's all here on "Some Day".
