5.0 out of 5 stars They've done it again!
If you weren't there in person in a Southern household, this is the best way to re-live the things Southern Mamas tell their daughters. These two ladies have entertained us completely in previous writings and their wisdom goes on and on. Read it on a rainy day, read it when things aren't going right, when you just burned the supper, read it when the dog has just messed up...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Recipes
I always look forward to a new book in Metcalfe's southern humor series. Her wickedly witty BEING DEAD IS NO EXCUSE made me laugh out loud. This book, however, is probably the weakest of the group. Although parts of it had me nodding my head and thinking, "that's like my mama, all right," I found that some of the chapters rambled and the humor seemed to fall a little...

If you weren't there in person in a Southern household, this is the best way to re-live the things Southern Mamas tell their daughters. These two ladies have entertained us completely in previous writings and their wisdom goes on and on. Read it on a rainy day, read it when things aren't going right, when you just burned the supper, read it when the dog has just messed up the house, or you are mad at your children--but just read it. It is hilarious and uplifting. Write on, ladies, what a read.

This was a charming read after the first two delightful books by these authors. Lots of laughs and comparisons of the changing times.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Great to be from the Delta, Mississippi, and Southern!!, October 11, 2009

I have bought every one of Gaydens books. I can not wait till the next one comes out. I came from the Delta where these books were written about. I can see myself at some of these events (in the late 60's early 70's)!! I buy these books for gifts. Stories are great: Recipes are so easy to follow and they are exactly what I cooked in my younger years! I have been cooking different ones for my husband now. I Love All of the books, but to me Being Dead is no Excuse seems to be the Best, but it is hard to tell. I Love them All. In Some Day You'll Thank----So Many of the sayings are exactly what my Mother and Aunt would say. Read All the books if you want many hous of entertainment and easy, great recipes!
I always pick up one of the books when I am feeling down, for a laugh, you will get one too. Don't forget to send for Gifts!!

This review is from: Some Day You'll Thank Me for This: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Being a "Perfect" Mother (Hardcover)
At this point in their writing careers you know that any new release from Gayden and Charlotte will take you to a place and time ( The Mississippi Delta in the present day) where gracious living, time-honored traditions, classic Southern cuisine, and the immortal struggle between mothers, daughters, and grandmothers still endure, thrive, and survive." Some Day.." delivers the goods as well as the first two books but the goods are lovingly wrapped in delicious sarcasm and tied with a 'tongue-in-cheek' ribbon. You'll learn about the perks of "being an old woman' ( I.e. saying whatever you damn well please, anywhere you choose, and free of fear of reprisal). You'll learn all about the Deltan 'Axis-of-Evil" which occurs when grandmothers join forces with their granddaughters to systematically undermine the mothers efforts at raising a 'precious angel baby darling'. My money's on the Grandmother. I am also so very proud to have been a part of the creation of this book. There are several sidebars and chapters that I submitted to Gayden and Charlotte and quite a few made the cut for publication. It was my first attempt at a serious book ( i.e. Something bound in hardback form ) and and I received credit for every chapter or amusing sidebar.
That being said, I would still insist that any person with a drop of precious Southern blood should obtain this book as well as the other two in the series as they are perfect gifts for anyone who prefers Co-Cola to Pepsi, Ford F150 trucks to Chevy pick-ups, and homemade mayonnaise to Miracle Whip..Some Day You'll Thank Me for This: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Being a "Perfect" Mother

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Southern libraries and collections on humor and women's issues, July 18, 2009
This review is from: Some Day You'll Thank Me for This: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Being a "Perfect" Mother (Hardcover)
The Southern mother and her habits is celebrated and explained in SOME DAY YOU'LL THANK ME FOR THIS, a funny book reviewing the lessons every Southern mother instills in her daughters. From caring for the family heirlooms to ignoring anything unpleasant and cooking traditional dishes, SOME DAY YOU'LL THANK ME FOR THIS is a fine survey of everything it takes to be a Southern woman. Perfect for Southern libraries and collections on humor and women's issues.

I always look forward to a new book in Metcalfe's southern humor series. Her wickedly witty BEING DEAD IS NO EXCUSE made me laugh out loud. This book, however, is probably the weakest of the group. Although parts of it had me nodding my head and thinking, "that's like my mama, all right," I found that some of the chapters rambled and the humor seemed to fall a little flat. Maybe we southerners just can't find it in our hearts to poke more than a little gentle fun at mama.

The recipes look absolutely yummy!

What's better, the wickedly good fun or the wickedly delicious recipes? There is a lot of both. I recommend the Chicken Marbella, but was amused by the tale of Marbella Pickett, too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad book, July 26, 2011
This book can not be called a novel for the recipes and it can't be called a recipe book for the novel. Didn't take me long to breeze through it. I hope people aren't paying good money for this book. It is the first one I have read by this author and I may look at the other books, but this one is a DUD in my opinion.

Love the book! What's not to love? Great southern gossip, truth telling (from the southern daughter point of view), and great food! So what if you don't personally know the individuals named? Every daughter of the south land will know someone who fits the bill; like a trip back "home" without the entanglements. Enjoy as fire flies flicker and Spanish moss blows in the hot, humid summer air.
