The bear is on the prowl in many different guises.  He may be the master thief stealing into Graceland, an intense young passenger experimenting in terror, or a psychiatrist haunted by his patient's nightmare.  Or maybe he's beautiful, lethal woman in a blood-red scarf.  So beware of the this huge, dangerous beast.  Because first he will enthrall you.. and then he will strike.

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Twenty-one stories by the winner of last year's Edgar for Best Novel (A Dance at the Slaughterhouse, 1981), demonstrating his versatility, productiveness, and growth as a writer. Though this is Block's third collection (after Like a Lamb to Slaughter and Sometimes They Bite), focusing on tales written after 1984, it includes four pieces published in the 60's in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. Each Hitchcock yarn concerns murder and packs a final twist but no emotional resonance: practice scales, really, played diligently by a writer learning his craft. The later stories show the development of Block's more mature themes. Three series characters appear in them: Bernie Rhodenbarr, a thief who steals nothing of value and is a veteran of five novels (The Burglar Who Liked Mondrian, etc.); Martin H. Ehrengraf, an attorney whose ruthless methods get his clients (accused murderers) off the hook and who appears only in stories; and popular p.i. Matt Scudder. Rhodenbarr's turn, in ``The Burglar Who Dropped in on Elvis''--a witty puzzler in which the thief is hired to break into and photograph Elvis's sequestered bedroom at Graceland--highlights Block's lighter vein, which has been drying out lately. The two Ehrengraf stories--which show the lawyer crucifying innocents to defend his clients--demonstrate how Block's earlier irony grew into a sharper mordancy. And the two Scudder tales, as well as several others, reflect his more recent concern with ever-darker subjects. ``Answers to Soldier,'' for instance, tells of a hit man who regularly warms up to his intended victims but inevitably reverts to his cruel ways; and ``The Merciful Angel of Death,'' a powerful exploration of compassion, relates Scudder's tracking of a woman who may be sending AIDS victims to a gentle death. A mixed bag ranging from the hack to the sublime--and, for its best work, a must for Block/Scudder fans. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. More About the Author

Lawrence Block (b. 1938) is the recipient of a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America and an internationally renowned bestselling author. His prolific career spans over one hundred books, including four bestselling series as well as dozens of short stories, articles, and books on writing. He has won four Edgar and Shamus Awards, two Falcon Awards from the Maltese Falcon Society of Japan, the Nero and Philip Marlowe Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America, and the Cartier Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writers Association of the United Kingdom. In France, he has been awarded the title Grand Maitre du Roman Noir and has twice received the Societe 813 trophy.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Block attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Leaving school before graduation, he moved to New York City, a locale that features prominently in most of his works. His earliest published writing appeared in the 1950s, frequently under pseudonyms, and many of these novels are now considered classics of the pulp fiction genre. During his early writing years, Block also worked in the mailroom of a publishing house and reviewed the submission slush pile for a literary agency. He has cited the latter experience as a valuable lesson for a beginning writer.

Block's first short story, "You Can't Lose," was published in 1957 in Manhunt, the first of dozens of short stories and articles that he would publish over the years in publications including American Heritage, Redbook, Playboy, Cosmopolitan, GQ, and the New York Times. His short fiction has been featured and reprinted in over eleven collections including Enough Rope (2002), which is comprised of eighty-four of his short stories.

In 1966, Block introduced the insomniac protagonist Evan Tanner in the novel The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep. Block's diverse heroes also include the urbane and witty bookseller--and thief-on-the-side--Bernie Rhodenbarr; the gritty recovering alcoholic and private investigator Matthew Scudder; and Chip Harrison, the comical assistant to a private investigator with a Nero Wolfe fixation who appears in No Score, Chip Harrison Scores Again, Make Out with Murder, and The Topless Tulip Caper. Block has also written several short stories and novels featuring Keller, a professional hit man. Block's work is praised for his richly imagined and varied characters and frequent use of humor.

A father of three daughters, Block lives in New York City with his second wife, Lynne. When he isn't touring or attending mystery conventions, he and Lynne are frequent travelers, as members of the Travelers' Century Club for nearly a decade now, and have visited about 150 countries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Block's short stories hit the mark., June 22, 1999
This review is from: Some Days You Get the Bear (Mass Market Paperback)
"Some Days You Get the Bear," is one of Lawrence Blocks short story collections. It's the third of four. Collections such as these are difficult to tae 1-5 because each of them in the collection is different from the others. I enjoyed some more than others; and there was one or two I didn't enjoy at all.

Characters we are familiar with from Blocks novels are here in the collection. Here we find Bernie Rhodenbarr, burglar and bookseller from the series of books that feature the person by that name. This time Bernie is hired to break into Graceland and hunt down the Elvis.

Martin Ehrengraf, a lawyer who never loses a case is here, too. Ehrengraf does not have a series of his own but is featured in Blocks fourth collection of short stories.

Matthew Scudder, Block's award winning detective is in at least two short stories. Scudder, as Block fans will recall, has is own series of more than a dozen novels.

Hit Man Keller, the assassin for hire has an entry here ass well.

All in all "Some Days You Get the Bear," is good reading and a must for Block enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Days the Bear Gets You, December 28, 2000
By
Daniel Bayles (Montgomery City, Mo. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Some Days You Get the Bear (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought "Some Days You Get the Bear" for the Bernie Rhodenbarr story, "The Buglar Who Dropped in On Elvis". It completed my collection of Bernie stories, and a whole lot more. There's something for everyone here... Three Matt Scudder stories, the first installment in Hit Man, two Martin Ehrengraf stories, and the brilliant "Cleaveland in My Dreams". I expected to read the Burglar story and shelve the title, but I ended up reading the whole book.

Lawrence Block fans will like this collection. I knocked off a few stories waiting in line at the polls. Condition of book when received was better than I've seen in stores.
