I absolutely love Art Garfunkel. I think he had one of the finest voices ever. Remeber him as he was. This album was just not good.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Musical Affair, January 30, 2007

"It wasn't Monet, it was France;
It's not what we say
But the dance we're in;
There lies the mysterious glue
In this set of songs I sing to you" ~ Art Garfunkel ~

As someone who grew up with the standards from my late parents' collection playing over and over at our musical household as sung by Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Cole, Vaughan, Martin, Bennett, Clooney, Day, London, Stafford, among many others, I totally welcome and embrace new interpretations by contemporary artists done in the most beautiful recordings with splendid vocals and sublime arrangements. This album fits that description to a T.

So it's only natural for me to love this "comeback album" of timeless standards by Art Garfunkel, "Some Enchanted Evening." And these are some great reasons.

Firstly, I have admired the music of Simon and Garfunkel in the past - "The Sound of Silence," "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Mrs. Robinson," to mention a few. When the duo went separate ways, I remained a fan of Art Garfunkel having loved some of his hit songs such as "Disney Girls," "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Since I Don't Have You," "It's All In The Game" and "Crying In The Rain," an awesome duet with another talented singer/guitarist/songwriter James Taylor.

Secondly, how can I not love the songs in the repertoire when these are everlasting favorites of mine? These are the most appealing works of brilliant tunesmiths and lyricists such as George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, Johnny Mercer, among others. Many thanks Mr. Garfunkel and everyone involved in this incredibly beautiful album of classic standards with such contemporary approach. Let there be a follow-up album of this kind. (Paging Richard Perry and Lauren Wild!).

Thirdly, with its sublimely remarkable arrangements and instrumentations from the finest musicians in the recording scene, the likes of Steve Gadd (drums), Dean Parks, Randy Kerber, Lee Thornburg, Bobby Ginsberg and Frank Simes (guitars), Mike Thompson and Alex Navarro (piano and keyboards), Bob Glaub (synth strings), Nick Sample (bass), Doug Webb (clarinet and flute), Chris Smith (harmonica), Maia Sharp (sax), Michael Montilla (percussion) as well as Mr. Garfunkel's perfect-in-every-way interpretations, this album will truly win not only your ears but also your heart. Mr. Garfunkel has not lost the luster of his voice with the passage of time. The gorgeousness of this album flows freely and smoothly from the first track "I Remember You" to the last "If I Loved You" making each rendition a showcase of his enchanting and heartwarming vocal style. "Someone To Watch Over Me" is stunning. "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" is absolutely beautiful. "What'll I Do?" is poignant and moving. "I'm Glad There Is You" is so charming. "It Could Happen To You" is inspiring. "Let's Fall In Love" is so lovable. "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" is outstanding. "Life Is But A Dream" is pensive and features producer Richard Perry on bass vocals. And the title track "Some Enchanted Evening" is enthralling. I've never heard this ditty sang in a totally different rhythm. It's so beautiful!

Lastly, it's an enchantingly perfect addition to your collection of ageless standards.

So deserving of *****TEN STARS*****rating! With my heartfelt recommendation for your listening pleasure always and forever.

"In this album, I confess I am under the sway of two magnificent singers, Chet Baker and Johnny Mathis." ~ Art Garfunkel ~

4.0 out of 5 stars Soothe your frazzled nerves and ease your troubled mind with the dulcet tones of Arthur Garfunkel., February 1, 2007
This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
Sometimes after a particularly difficult day at work all you want to do when you get home is kick back, relax and enjoy some great music. For many years, whenever I have found myself in this mode I would turn to Linda Ronstadt's landmark album "What's New" which she recorded back in the eighties with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Since that time any number of rock n' rollers have tried this idea with varying degrees of success. Most simply don't have the pipes to do justice to tunes from the Great American songbook. Exhibit A would be Rod Stewart. One of my very favorite male vocalists of all time is Art Garfunkel. When I heard that he was about to release an album of this music I was pretty confident that he could pull it off. And I was not disappointed. In the tradition of "What's New", Art Garfunkel's new disc "Some Enchanted Evening" offers a baker's dozen of some of the greatest American pop tunes ever written. It is really a joy to listen to.

It is probably no coincidence that "Some Enchanted Evening" includes a pair of numbers from that "What's New" album. It seems that George and Ira Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me" becomes more popular with each passing year. In 1924, legendary bandleader Paul Whiteman had a #1 hit with the classic Irving Berlin tune "What'll I Do". Art Garfunkel pulls off both of these songs with ease and makes them all his own. The upbeat arrangement of Harold Arlen's "Let's Fall In Love" would remind you quite a bit of Garfunkel's 1988 hit single "So Much In Love". One of my favorite songs on this CD would have to be the great Rogers and Hammerstein favorite "If I Loved You" from the musical "Carousel". The arrangement is superb! Fans of Art Garfunkel know that he really enjoys doo-wop music and that he always seems to include at least one such tune in his albums. "Life Is But A Dream" was a major hit for the Harptones in the mid fifties. Art Garfunkel's updated version features a marvelous bass vocal by none other than the album's producer Richard Perry. Very nice!! I also enjoyed hearing a number of other familiar favorites like Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You", Lerner and Loewe's "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and of course the title track "Some Enchanted Evening". While I certainly enjoyed Garfunkel's rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" for my money the best version of that tune remains Jay and the Americans 1965 hit single. For me the sleeper on this disc would have to be "I'm Glad There Is You". I had never heard this tune before but I enjoyed it immensely. See if you agree.

From now on, "Some Enchanted Evening" will occupy a spot in my music library right next to "What's New". And while this disc is not quite up to the lofty standards of "What's New" it is nonetheless a solid four star offering that you will certainly enjoy. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Grace, May 28, 2007

This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
"Some Enchanted Evening" touches me with Art's loving renditions of these songs, most of which I have heard by other artists. Art's vocals embrace the lyrics and wrench deep meaning from them. On the Irving Berlin classic "What'll I Do," his quiet vocals are familiar territory for anyone who has ever tried to mend from a broken heart, "What'll I do with just a photograph to tell my troubles to?" I was not familiar with Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)." Art's version is quintessentially romantic, like a sweet Brazilian embrace, "I who was lost & lonely, believing life was only a bitter tragic joke have found with you the meaning of existence, oh my love." What ambrosia! The Harold Arlen song "Let's Fall in Love" is reinvigorated with Art's breezy vocals hitting the higher register and Maia Sharp's gorgeous sax solo sending the track into the stratosphere. There are many other excellent performances on this delightful CD like the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me" & the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic that is the title track. This is a mellow mood CD, but done with such exquisite grace that it can't help but put a smile on your face. Enjoy!

...and this one is no exception! Like so many other singers today...Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt and Barry Manilow among them...Art Garfunkel has recorded a complete album of the great standards, and these songs fit his timeless voice just beautifully! What is so amazing is that Art's voice just doesn't seem to age! He sounds pretty much the same as he did on the first Simon and Garfunkel LP "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M."! There isn't one track here that will dissapoint...every one is a winner! For those who aren't aware, there is a special pressing of this CD sold only at Target stores that features a bonus track called "While We're Young". This is a really nice tune as well, so go down to Target if you can and get this great CD with the extra track!

4.0 out of 5 stars Garfunkels Back, March 11, 2007

Art Garfunkel is back with a new cd of standards. Every artist of a certain age is doing this music now, but Garfunkels approach to these songs is different. I knew most all of these songs, but with his voice and the arrangements it was almost like hearing them for the first time. That's a good thing. I loved this cd. His voice being so familiar from his own classic hits, he gives these songs a mellow "pop" feel. The only thing that could have made this cd better? His early backup singer Leah Kunkel!! They should do a duet cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classics from a Classic, January 30, 2007
By
Maureen McCarthy (New York City, NY USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
On his first new solo album since 2002, Garfunkel interprets 13 classics of the American songbook. Produced by his longtime collaborator Richard Perry who also recorded Art's 1975 platinum-selling Breakaway album. This collection includes Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me," Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do," Arlen & Koehler's "Let's Fall In Love," and many more. Also includes "If I Loved You" one of my favorites from Carousel sung by Shirley Jones & Gordon MacRae

As with his 2002 release of Everything Waits To Be Noticed, Garfunkel proves he is a magnificent solo artist - no longer to be known as half of a duo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alanna Nash All Wet, February 18, 2007
This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
Well, it's Amazon.com's fault for hiring Alanna Nash to review this wonderful Art Garfunkle CD. Yes, she's an expert journalist regarding Elvis Presley, but her viewpoint that this new Garfunkle release is 'sleep-inducing', is just plain wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and so is Ms. Nash. HOWEVER, read the reviews from the real people, that follow, and you'll get a clearer picture of what this selection of songs is really all about.
Yes, the songs have been done countless times by many other celebrity singers, but that doesn't make this collection any less enjoyable. Garfunkle adds his trademark soft glow to these classic American songs, and both the songs and Garfunkle's voice should be considered American Treasures.
Highly recommended. Even to Elvis fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars IN THE MOOD FOR A LITTLE ROMANCE?, March 4, 2007
This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
Art Garfunkel has always gotten short shrift on his share of the credit for the overwhelming success of Simon & Garfunkel. His ethereal, sometimes downright angelic, voice provided the perfect counterpoint to Paul's cynicism. Without Art, Paul could never convincingly have pulled off "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It's Garfunkel's sincerity and flawless phrasing that elevates any love song from puppy love to poetic romance. And on "Some Enchanted Evening" he scores 13 bullseyes with a diverse selection of songs such as "I Remember You," "I'm Glad There Is You," "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars," "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face (from My Fair Lady)," "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and "If I Loved You (from Carousel)."

Put this CD on, slow dance with that someone special and go from Carousel to arousal. The pure romance of this CD will truly provide "Some Enchanted Evening." Once you have found it you will never let it go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always a Great Voice, February 8, 2007

This review is from: Some Enchanted Evening (Audio CD)
I'm not into the whole 'let's redo the great American songbook' thing, but at least Art does it well. I have always loved his voice, so he can do no wrong by me; But his arrangements here are highly listenable in a low key kind of way. Johnny Mathis def. comes to mind here, but this is just a great mellow album to have on when you just want to relax and listen to what is one of the greatest pop/folk vocalists of our time. Plus it seems the selections he made were highly personal; Some I knew, some I didn't...But I enjoyed them all!
